[Question #4424] Handjob

Hi Dr.

1)Can you get herpes hsv2 from a unprotected handjob? No oral, vaginal or any penetrative sex done. Fully clothed masseseus. Didn't check hands.

2)The CDC website says that infection of herpes would show symptoms within 3-10 days. I'm on day 8 since exposure. Am I at risk or have to wait to day 11. I have no symptoms but for some bad choice underwear which caused some itchiness between my thighs and butcheeks which has reduced.

1)  No!  You cannot get herpes from a handjob.
2)  If you are on day 8, you are almost there!  And if the handjob was your only "risk", there is no risk and you don't need to watch for 10 days - you will not get herpes from this contact.
You can put your mind at risk about this particular sexual contact, promise ;-)
Herpes requires contact between genitals or mouth to genitals, none of which you describe here.

Thank you Terri for the reassurance.

My only concern is my anus area which is slightly red and quite umconfortable. It's reddish but no lesions.its 5 days now of redness. I usually have some form of jock itch occasionally because I sweat down there and also due to hot  and sweaty weather here.symptoms have reduced but not gone away. The massuese never touched or penetrated my anus.just rubbed my behind area.  Is there any chance for anus to be infected with herpes.

Just an update. Went to a dermatologist to check the redness around the anus. He said is more of chauffing between the area and and not affecting the  primary skin. He gave  cream and medicated powder.

Still having anxiety over any sti or herpes infection. Also. Just wanted to know if you don't have an  initial outbreak of herpes within 3-10 days of exposure, Will you still have a breakout? Or unlikely?

You were not at risk from any activity that you did.  I'm not sure how else to reassure you other than to keep saying this!
