[Question #4479] HSV 1 exposure

Hello-
A few weeks ago I had a brief oral sex encounter with an ex girlfriend. I am a male. We had dated for 8 months earlier but took a break for two months and then had this encounter a few weeks ago. I had gotten tested twice for both herpes viruses while we were together. All with negative outcomes. I know from our past that she thinks she may have had a cold sore as a kid, which is why I got tested to check my status. My question is do you think that small oral sex enounter with her is enough grounds for me to get tested again in case she transferred it to my genitals even if I have tested while with her a few months back? I haven’t noticed any symptoms or sores or anything, but because she told me, I feel as if I am now responsible for this news and responsible to alert future partners. I am starting to see a new partner and am I wondering If i should tell her about the possible oral to genital exposure before we become sexually intimate? I plan to take the Western Blot in January, but I’m wondering if I should wait to be intimate with anyone until I have those results then.
Thanks for your time.

Also, does it make sense to test every time I notice a small pimple type pump or tiny red spot. Anytime I’ve had them after sex they’ve gone away in a couple of days. I know some people say their infections are very minor, but I’m a bit confused as to what are grounds for testing and what is just like foliculitis or a pimple

I feel like you and I have dealt with the question already?
I think the odds that a very brief oral sex encounter with no significant symptoms would end up with you having herpes, is almost zero. I think you are worrying too much about this. Yes, get the blot to reassure yourself but until then I personally don't feel that this is something that you need to disclose that a previous partner MIGHT have had a cold sore as a child and gave you very brief oral sex. I think most people would agree that this is not required. If you are truly negative for both HSV 1 and 2 and acquire new infection, I don't believe it would show up as a tiny red spot. It would show up as water blister-like lesions if symptomatic.

Ok thank you. I apologize but I was just looking for clarification. 12 weeks is okay to take the Western Blot? That’s my last question. Thanks for your time.

And to clarify, I’ve gotten small pimple/red spots like that after vagnial sex as well at the base of my genitals that went away in a few days as well with little to no discomfort. So whenever that happens I get nervous. Again, thanks for your help with this.

Yes, 12 weeks is good for the blot
I really feel that small red spots don't sound like herpes to me but if you are still concerned about the spots, you should see a clinician and have them evaluated in person.
