[Question #4485] Follow up from yesterday’s conversation

Hello Doctor,

Thank you for the insight provided yesterday.  It gave me a true feeling of security and I appreciate it.

I do however have a few questions.  My wife had strep throat about two months ago and for the last 3 weeks or so has been coughing uncrontrollably and complaining that her ear hurts.  Our 10 month daughter has also been coughing as well and has what seems to be thrush on her tongue but don’t quote me.  To be honest my throat or  salivary glands have seemed to be causing me issues as well.  Could this be the result of some STD aside from HIV since you hav to me that it doesn’t fit into everything going on with us?  I also have some burning along my legs and brown lines in my nails.   My wife is going to the ER sometime either tonight or tmrw.  Thank you!

Welcome back to the Forum although I must say, I'm sorry that you continue to try to link your family's recent series of illnesses to your extramarital encounter back in April.  It continues to sound like within the family you have passed a viral respiratory illness around amongst yourselves- these thing do have a tendency to hang on and that seems to be what is happening to you.  There is no STI that would explain these illnesses.

The burning in your legs and brown lines in your days are in no way suggestive of any STI either.

The subtext of your question is that you continue to worry about HIV.  I suggested you test in our earlier exchange- have you done that?  if not please consider it. Alternatively, I suggest you speak with a confidential counselor who might help you work through this.  This is not HIV.  you need to figure our how to move forward. EWH

Thank you for the reply doctor.  I am moving on with the whole HIV thing because as you’ve said that isn’t it, however, is there anything that can be done to treat a viral infection as such?

Also, could this be some type of streptococcus , rheumatic Fever or something along that line?  My throat does feel a little tight and i don have a lot of white on the back of my tongue.  I was tested for strep but the spot test came back negative.  I hate to beat a dead horse but I do trust your words and am only trying to figure this out.

Thanks

Unfortunately, viral infections need to run their course.  Your concerns about streptococci and rheumatic fever or similar problems are beyond the scope of this forum and would be better discussed with your own doctor.  FYI, with proven strep infections in the family (I believe you mentioned this- I presume they were proven with tests), the rapid strep tests that many doctor use miss up to help of strep throats.  Again, this is something for you and your doctor to discuss.  EWH---

Thank you Doctor.  Something is definitely going on.  My 10 old son’s throat is hurting again.  As I said earlier, he was diagnosed with strep throat a few months back.  We are headed to the emergency room here shortly.  I will give you an update to what was said shortly.  I plan to have myself checked out as well, as I am not feeling well either.  I actually look sick with dark bags under my eyes.

Wish us luck and thank you for both your professionalism and sound advice.  It has given me the courage to face this head on and I thank you!

Doctor, I went to the emergency room and asked for an HIV test but they wouldn’t give me one.  They told me that I needed to go through my Primary Care Doctor to do so, however they did draw blood because my heart rate was extremely high.  From the finding my glucose was 160 mg and they said that I should also have it evaluated with my PCD.  I am still not feeling well and having slight cough, ear ache, pain in my jaws, white stuff on the back of my tongue, burning on the skin between my knees, a small lump and pain right above my left buttock and lower back- It feels like a lump of fat but is causing pain, brown lines appearing in my fingernails and very dark circles under my eyes.  Hopefully she will be able to do an all out test to see exactly what this is.  My strep came back negative as well.  I am also afraid that I may have Diabetes or some dibilitating disease at this point because the symptoms have been around since the beginning of July.

Thank you for the follow-up.  While I agree that there is no reason for concern about you having HIV and that nothing you have described suggests the HIV could cause any of this, I wish a test had been done to put the matter to rest.  Typically, this thread would be closed at this point.  I will leave it open however so that you can update us on what your PCP says.  EWH ---

Doctor,

Quick question.  The Anxiety and symptoms are really consuming me and I’m afraid that I am unable to wait for my appt.  Would me buying an HIV testing kit from either Walgreens or CVS be advised?  If so, I will grab one this afternoon and test.  Please let me know.  Thank you

this will be the final answer, then this thread will be closed as you cannot stop asking questions and to do so is an abuse of the Forum.

It has been months since the exposure that generates your concerns.  Most of the OTC HIV tests test only for HIV antibodies and thus are not conclusive until 8-12 weeks after exposure.  Thus testing with such a test at this time will provide accurate results.  My own sense however is that you would be better served by calling your doctor's office and working to move your appointment up.

End of thread.  EWH
