[Question #4502] Genital Herpes and strep throat??

Hi Doctor,
I had an encounter with a lady I don’t know when I was drunk, anyways we ended up kissing, having sex and mutual oral, all without protection, silly I know.
Fast forward a week and a half I leave work with a sore throat and began feeling feverish, later that night I notice blisters on my shaft in the shower that later developed into open sores which I suspect is herpes. This was three days ago and I plan to visit the clinic real soon.
However, the greatest discomfort right now is my throat, not my penis! It’s hard to swallow and eat!
I noticed now on day 3 my tonsils are red with some white blotches and a few white spots on the back of the throat. I did have high fever in the first two days but I woke up somewhat better this morning
Assuming it is genital herpes, how do you explain this excruciating throat pain?
Could it also be a herpes of the throat also from the kissing or mutual oral or could it be a symptom of the genital herpes??
Regards,
John Doe

I'm sorry you are going through this and I would encourage you to get yourself to an urgent care clinic or your own doc tomorrow if possible. they need to swab the blisters on your penis AND your throat. You could have acquired HSV 1 genital infection from receiving unprotected oral sex as well as kissing this partner, if they had HSV 1 orally, with or without symptoms present. It could most certainly cause the throat symptoms that you are experiencing, particularly when combined with the genital lesions. Please - don't wait around to get this diagnosed. The longer you wait for testing (and insist on a swab test of the penis lesions and your throat) and ask that it be a PCR test rather than a culture if at all possible - far more sensitive than culture. Please write me back and tell me about your clinician visit, OK?
