[Question #4522] Strange red bump in pubic hair

Hi there,

This is a follow up to my previous question. Here’s the relevant background information:

Nov 10: Visited a massage parlor and received protected oral sex.
Nov 12: Visited another massage parlor and the masseuse briefly licked and made contact with her lips on my penis, but never inserted my penis in her mouth.
Nov 13: At night, noticed a small reddish bump on my penis shaft, near the base and close to where my scrotum meets the shaft. It’s located in the middle of pubic hair. I shave frequently (though it’s been over a week now). That said... this looked like an ingrown hair but I couldn’t locate the hair follicle underneath.
Nov 14: I may have scrubbed with a loofah in the shower too hard this morning. The bump started to bleed.

Checking again now, the bump is not as red, and the “height” of the bump is gone. There are still trace amounts of blood and fluid. It just looks like a 1mm piece of missing skin, and probably will scab over. The hair follicle still isn’t visible.

How likely is this to be an STD? Is this just an ingrown hair, pimple, or from what I’ve read, folliculitis?

Thanks in advance again. Appreciate the answers.

Welcome back to the Forum.  I know that when we are anxious we all have a tendency to notice things we might not have noticed before and to attribute those things to our indiscretions.  I think that is what is happening here.  The appearance and location you describe as well as what happened when you scrubbed it is absolutely typical of folliculitis.  (Not all folliculitis has a visible ingrown hair).  It does not suggest an STI including herpes and syphilis.  I would not worry and if you can stand it, see no need for concern or for testing.  Hope this helps.  EWH---

Thanks again, Dr. Hook.

Would it be safe to assume that based on all the background information, I most likely haven't contracted an STI, if at all? Including the episode on Nov 12 where there was some unprotected licking (but no penis into mouth contact)?

I would hate to ask again (as I originally did in my other thread and I'm sure you get enough repeated questions), but would having unprotected sex with my significant other be fine at this point?

No change in my assessment.  It is safe to have unprotected sex with your regular partner, just as I said earlier.  Really!  EWH---
