[Question #4523] Buttock herpes?

Had unprotected oral and protected vaginal with CSW in April. No classic herpes symptoms: ie no blisters or other sores on penis. Tested negative with Igg at 16plus weeks. At 3 weeks a red spot appeared on my buttock.  Around the size of a pencil eraser. Very slightly raised but without a pimple like head. It lasted for at least ten weeks without change and then faded away. Derm said probably a pimple of some sort. In early October got another nearly identical spot a few inches away. It is still there but can be painful to sit on. NP at derm said likely in grown hair. It seems strange to appear twice like this and to last so long (over ten weeks the  first time and now over 6). Does this sound like herpes?

That's possible of course but it seems likely that the NP would recognize herpes, yes?  And with the negative IgG at 16 weeks, though not perfect, there is a high chance it would have picked up HSV 2 and a pretty good chance it would have picked up HSV 1 as well.  Are you saying the first one lasted 10 weeks?  Herpes does not ever last 10 weeks.

Thank you.  Yes the first one lasted  10+ weeks and the second is now close to 7 weeks.  My concern is that the ASHA website says that buttock herpes can be slower to heal -- what does that mean?  A couple of other follow ups:  (1) How often do you see herpes w/ no classic primary outbreak -- that is no blisters in the case of a male on or very near the penis? (2) Does herpes ever show up not as a blister but as a red spot?

that is true, yes.  The skin of the buttocks is thick and the healing takes longer but 10 weeks?  I have never seen that personally.
We certainly see people who missed their primary infection and only notice a recurrence on the buttocks.
Herpes can appear as a red area yes, but often then goes on to make a sore or blister.
Did have the thing on the buttocks swab tested for HSV ?
