[Question #4548] Any risk from oral sex

Hello Last night I received an unprotected oral sex from a women that I've know for a while but I don't know her HIV status. Nothing else happened we only kissed and she performed an oral sex on me. Am I at any risk of contracting HIV from this event? Am I at risk of contracting any other STDs? Should I be concerned? Thank you

Welcome to the Forum.  I'll be glad to comment.  Receipt of oral sex tends to be a low risk for acquisition of all STIs.  With respect to HIV risk, unless there is something particularly worrisome about your partner, the likelihood that she has HIV is quite low (substantially less than 1% in most of North America) and there are no proven cases is which a person has acquired HIV from receipt of oral sex, much less from kissing.  I would not be worried about HIV in the least about HIV and see no need  for testing.

I hope this comment is helpful.  EWH

hello Dr Hook
im sorry to bother you again but I have one more concern about my question from the other day. My wife is pregnant and since that day when I recieved the oral sex im too afraid to have sex with her because im afraid about her and the baby. I know you said its nothing to worry about and a very low risk. So do you think its safe for me to perform sex with my wife? do you think nothing will be transmitted to her or the baby? thank you again

When a partner is pregnant it is natural for a person's anxietyand/or guilt to be heightened.  Nonetheless my assessment is unchanged- no risk to you or your wife (or your unborn child) from unprotected sex.  EWH---
