[Question #4655] Red irritated area between groin

Hello Terri,

I got a redness after bath and when I check in the groin area it felt like the skin has been off but I can’t tell if this is more like a skin issue or more like a herpes concern. This does not pain until I touch it. As we spoke multiple times with the nature of exposure I had (protected) briefly and my multiple antibody tests igGs and Western blot after 6 months being negative for both 1&2 I am not very worried but still have a nagging thought in my mind. Here is how it looks and I am not asking u to diagnose looking into it as I know it is against the practice.

I just would like to know your two cents about this and would like to know if you recommend any next steps. It burns slightly when I walk or sweats but don’t feel any itching. I wore a new underwear yesterday and tight pants that’s all I remember but don’t remember having any irritation yesterday and no irritation due to sweat as it is freakingly cold here in Indianapolis :(

Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks and happy holidays.

The western blot should be your final answer on the herpes question.  However, if you have sores in the genital area, I would recommend that you see a clinician for an opinion in person while the sores are present.  I hope that you can find out what might be causing this.  I do not believe it is herpes based on your previous negative blot but it would be good to know exactly what is going on here.

Terri,

I did not see any bump coming in the last few days, no itching that I can remember and it did not itch at all. it just felt like the skin over that region has been ripped off but I just don’t remember 100%. When you said my blot answers the herpes question does that mean I need to see clinician for other skin issues or are you wanting me to get diagnosis for other issues including herpes?

This showed up between my pelvis and thigh fold even few days after the exposure and the doctor dismissed saying it is not herpes at urgent care. The skin irritation got better in 2-3 days and if the same happens now can I not suspect herpes then? Your answer not very clear. Isn’t it a very strange location for the first infection to show up when we had protective sex and there was no vaginal fluids touching or oral fluids touching in that area? Any advise? Pls reassure me if this is something I am too much worried about.

A first infection would not show up in the groin - that would be a recurrence but your western blot was negative and you've had no new contacts, correct?
I'm glad that the physician at urgent care does not think this is herpes.  I think that you should be reassured both by the negative blot AND your exam at urgent care that this is not herpes

Dr Terri, this is in reference to the earlier question of catching oral herpes from breast exposure. I am developing cracked lip once every few months. The cracked lip is slightly burning but it heals in few days I don’t see any scabs or ulceration and it does not pain much. This is happening only at one spot all the time. There is no pain, only feels slight burning when food touches it. Do you see any concern? What are moth fissures due to herpes and does cracked lip resemble a herpes sore? Should I be worried. You suggested no further testing due to my exposure but do u see any remote risk or nothing here? And my lips feel a lip dry so is this a cracked lip or sore? Pls advise if this is can be set a side or repeated cracking of lip at one location after this exposure if not concerning . Thank you.

I don't believe that cracked lips resemble a herpes sore.  I do not feel like there is even a remote risk with you contact, no.  Herpes lesions on the lip would look like water blisters that then ulcerate and scab over.  You are not describing anything like this.
