[Question #4937] HSV1and2

Was recently (less than a year) tested positive for both HSV1and2 genitally, I was first tested positive for hsv1 and negative 2 now I am testing positive for both, since my initial outbreak, I haven’t stopped having outbreaks since July 2018, they come and go monthly, I just started antiviral treatment and the lesions have since gone away but the constant burning/tingling still happens, I’m fairly healthy, will my body learn to fight this off eventually so that I’m not constantly feeling this way? Also what are my transmission rates with/without protection? I am female.

How were you diagnosed with HSV 2 genital infection?  Antibody blood test?  Swab test from a lesion?  If a blood test, do you have a copy of the results so you can tell me the number associated with your positive test?  How long do your outbreaks last?  I will be able to answer your question better if you can provide me this information.

Swab test, and antibody blood test, I do not have the number associated with my blood test. They do not last long maybe a couple days, more so during my menstrual cycle, I recently started taking daily suppression and I haven’t had any lesions since, but I do still have the burning and tingling sensation

without a swab of the genital area when you have the tingling and burning, it is not possible to know if this represents virus activity or not.  If you could present to your clinician when you have this and ask for a swab test, that would be helpful for you, I think.  It should be a general swab - not of a specific area but the labia and perineum all over.  If you are taking daily antiviral medicine, have sex about twice a week on average, avoid sex with outbreaks and notify partners of your infection, the transmission rate ON AVERAGE is about 2% per year.  If your partner also uses condoms, it drops to around 1% per year.
