[Question #4947] HSV results

Hi!

I recently had a Herpes I & II IGM (Elisa)  and Herpes SELECT I IgG and Herpes Select II IgG tests (1/30/19) and got my results. The IgM tested 1.15 and the Select I 0.2 and Select II <0.2. I’ve been stressed out with these results (have read that IgM results are not recommended) but do know I’m not necessarily a low risk candidate. My previous partner has Herpes, while we did have sex (condoms and still wearing boxers and had this crazy idea wiping myself with alcohol would help), he had an outbreak (rarely has them since he’s had herpes for a long time) in December…we waited around 3 weeks to have sex, did have an encounter a week and a half before his outbreak and our last one was January 13th. His sore disappeared within 3-4 days.

I’ve had no visible symptom, the only thing I’ve felt for a week and a half was a slight nuisance in my throat (similar soreness to when in front of an AC for long) and very tired but also had my period. Not sure if to test for something else? (Mono?)  I left my results with my Doctor and he said that I had the virus and suggested I get a IgG test done after the 2/14, that if it was negative to not worry about it. This comment after me bringing up it being a low positive and perhaps cross reactivity. I’ve read of sometimes Rheumatoid Factors also interfering, I’ve had Ana tests come positive then specific panels come out negative. Not really sure if it’s that kind of RF but figure the more info the better. Also asked about the Western Blot but he didn’t know one was available for Herpes and then proceeded to mention that in his 30 years of experience the Herpeselect worked just fine.

I’m not really sure how to proceed from this point. While I’ve tried to reach STI clinics/My Dr. feel like a lot of the information isn’t necessarily the most updated. Some clinics deal with HIV and other STDS but not Herpes. Inquiries on medicine usually goes if there’s no physical symptom they can’t give prescription and none recommend suppressive therapy because see it as pointless.

Aside the horrible anxiety of not knowing 100% if I do have it not feeling like the information is reliable makes it feel even worse and completely uneasy as to what should be my next steps or if I do see another Dr. how to talk to them because it feels like just get a generic response that feels outdated.

Unfortunately, your doctor ordered a test that never should have been ordered and has, in my experience, a 80-90% false positive rate.  This is just so unfortunate for you.  You should be relying only upon the IgG test which is negative.  Nothing you have described concerns me that you have herpes - AT ALL.
When was the last time you had intercourse with the partner with herpes?  With all the types of precautions you used, infection seems ultra unlikely.
If you cannot believe the negative IgG tests, you could get the herpes western blot and I can help you with that if you need help.

Thank you! My last encounter with this person was January 13th, so almost a month ago. I felt somewhat hesitant with my IgG results since it had been two weeks since the encounter (Lab was 1/30) and not sure if its too soon for the antibodies to be picked up. I have another IgG order, when do you suggest I do this lab?  I'm also interested in the Western Blot for more peace of mind, too. I really want to carry on with life/relationships but very scared now with this.

I understand your concern and that certainly entered into my discussion with you but with all the protection you used, I find it hard to see how you would have become infected.  You could do another IgG when you are 6 weeks out from your last encounter with this person and if negative then, there is a 70% chance it will stay that way.  Avoid the use of antiviral therapy during this time as it can influence the test results.  I can help you with the western blot at westoverheights.com when you are ready for the blot.  I would want you to wait a full 12 weeks before doing that test so you can be really certain you have waited long enough.
