[Question #4983] Oral thrush and tongue sores

My concern is that everything  related  to oral thrush  is going back to weakened immune  system and all web sites are saying it is HIV realted. Is there any other reason that would cause Oral thursh.I have had Oral thrush for months now. I did take three rapid test beyond 6 weeks. Should I not be worried?

Welcome back to the Forum although I must say that it saddens me that you continue to worry.  Your tests provided definitive answers and as both Dr. Handsfield and I have said previously, should be believed.  Related to your continuing concerns, several additional comments:

1.  Are you sure you have thrush?  Many other processes, including dehydration and smoking can cause discoloration of the tongue (which is only sometimes involved with thrush) and the throat and roof of the mouth.  Thrush should be diagnosed by a health care provider (even some less experienced health care providers get this wrong).
2.  If indeed you have thrush, please be aware that there are many factors which predispose to thrush including diabetes, recent antibiotic ingestion, and other forms of immunosuppression.  Even when these thing are considered, many, many cases of thrush have no predisposing factors.
3.  I worry that you are looking for answers on the internet.  Unfortunately, the internet overstates the frequency of thrush as a manifestation of HIV.  Please stay off the internet for health related information.  Much of what is found there is out of date, taken out of context, or just plain wrong.

I hope this comment is helpful.  Please believe your test results.   As Dr. Handsfield and I have both told you, your tests results were conclusive long ago.  If there have been no further exposures, there is no need for further testing.  EWH

I was told by ENT I had thrush, my tongue is white and after I brush it comes back after few hours. When I drink and eat certain foods my mouth also  burns.  My tongue is aIso hairy like and I have a white spot on the side  .I have diabetes  but it is under control. I do not drink or smoke. I know you both have told me my test are conclusive but what would make my tongue stay like this for months. Is there anyway anitbodies whould not show up untill past 3 months. Can stress and anxiety  have a role on my body that  would effect my tongue?

Repeating your question about test reliability will not change the fact that your results are conclusive and should be believed.

I would suggest you speak with an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist to determine what might be discoloring your tongue.  It is not due to undetected HIV.  EWH
