[Question #5085] Indirect HSV 2 transmission

Hello
I am wondering how long the HSV 2 virus lives on a wet baby wipe, and if a non infected person mistakenly grabbed a dirty baby wipe used by an infected person with HSV 2 and then wiped their genitals with it, can this non infected person now become infected with HSV 2?
Thank you.

That seems a really unlikely scenario to me but if there was very little time in between the use of the baby wipe by an infected person and the uninfected person, there is a tiny chance of transmission but the chemicals on the baby wipe likely killed the virus before the second person could use it.

There was roughly 30 minutes to 1 hour between the two incidents, does that lower the odds?? I’m terrified of this mode of transmission it was such a freak accident.
I just read everywhere that the virus lives longer on a wet surface I’m so scared.

Yes, definitely, an interval between use of the wipes decreases the changes of transmission, which are already very close to zero! I would guess the risk here is something one in a million, if even that.
While it is true that the virus can live longer on a wet surface, the fact that the wipes contain chemicals that would act against the virus negates that effect.
