hi dr hook,
so i received the results from the lab. they did blood test for syphilis, herpes and hep C and they were negative. they did a wet mount for trich yeast and BV and were negative, but the pap showed yeast, otherwise the pap was normal (no hpv). is three months and three weeks(after sex) enough time for a pap to show any abnormalities or did i test too soon? is this enough time for syph, hep C and herp to be considered conclusive?  i was tested for chlam/gonorrhea with a vaginal swab and that was negative as well. i refused to be tested for hiv and now Im even more worried because the pap showed yeast and ive never had a yeast infection and i know that could mean that i have hiv :((( i feel like everything is leading me to believe that i have hiv. i had the enormous swollen lymph node on the right side on the butt cheek (4-5 mm above the anus opening), and now there is yeast showing. also i have constant headaches and i have pain throughout my body :(. i made the guy to get tested for hiv and he was but he was tested a week before we had intercourse (nov 11) and then he was tested again feb 11 of this year. he said he was negative but im worried he may have been using pep because he was tested three months after his initial test which was nov 11 ( we had intercourse nov 18). i know you said six weeks is plenty of time for confirmatory results. thanks again for your help

As you have been told before, you need to be more patient in waiting for a response.

In addition, your questions are somewhat repetitive and are precisely the sort of questions you should be asking of your health care provider- whomever saw you had the opportunity to exam you, to take a more detailed history than we can do on line and to engage in general discussion.  In most cases, they should be a better source of information than this forum.  It is not our intent or our mission to take the place of your interactions with health care professionals.

In answer to your questions:
1.  I am disappointed that you did not get a test for HIV.  As both Dr. Handsfield and I have told you, you are at very low risk and we anticipate that the test would be negative, providing you with reassurance that you need.
2.  Your test results for syphilis, herpes and hepatitis C are all conclusive and should be believed.  No further testing is needed in relationship to the encounter you have described.
3.  Blood tests for herpes are not infrequently falsely positive, we specifically recommend against getting these tests.
4. Yeast are normally present in the genital tract. The fact that yeast was seen on your PAP smear is normal and typically does not require treatment.  IT DOES NOT SUGGEST THAT YOU HAVE HIV!!!!
5.  You should ask your doctor about the "swollen lymph node" on your bottom. the location you describe is not normally a spot where lymph nodes are located.  It may be something else.
6.  If you had acquired HPV three months earlier, it would have been expected to show up on your PAP smear.

A final suggestion.  Your concerns about HIV are unfounded and as Dr. Handsfield and I have pointed out, are unwarranted.  You are clearly having trouble accepting this and have not taken appropriate steps to prove that you were not infected.  My sincere advice is that you would benefit from mental health counseling regarding your unwarranted fears.  I say this out of concern for you, nothing more.  EWH

has there been a lot of false negatives for the herpes tests? mine came back neg. they tested for igg and igm for type 1 and 2. should i believe this result? thank you so much for your reply and help. i will get a treatment for the yeast just because its itchy and painful at times.  it was a NP that i saw, there is no doc at the school's clinic. i showed her a picture of the swollen  area and she said it looked like a cysts and that cysts can be healed by the host's immune system without the need for them do be drained or anything, because mine disappeared on its own. but she also said that there are no lymph nodes in that area but that is a typical place of where cysts would occur. thank you so so much for everything. i appreciate your help.

Perhaps I was not sufficiently explicit in my earlier reply.  You should believe your test results.  You chose to get tested with tests that we recommend specifically against and were fortunate to not have a falsely positive test result.  I recommend you stop thee!.There is NO credible reason for you to think that you have herpes, HIV or any other STI. The challenge is for you to believe it.

NPs are high trained and often are expert in sexual health.  If you did not ask her, you should have.

I hope this reply is clear.  EWH

hi dr hook,
well i guess  ill wait and see if my body starts showing more symptoms related to hiv. but thanks again so much for everything. i cant thank you enough. i know this question is off topic, but do you think there will ever be cure for hiv? dont lymphocytes spend most of their time in the lymph nodes rather than in the blood? there must be a lot more virus in there than in the blood.

You come to the this site and then ignore it.  Let me repeat what I said above and the most important advice I can give you- "Your concerns about HIV are unfounded and as Dr. Handsfield and I have pointed out, are unwarranted.  You are clearly having trouble accepting this and have not taken appropriate steps to prove that you were not infected.  My sincere advice is that you would benefit from mental health counseling regarding your unwarranted fears.  I say this out of concern for you, nothing more."

The are no good prospects for curing HIV at this time. On the other hand, HIV is currently a readily treatable infection in which persons who take their medications live a normal life, just as persons with diabetes of hypertension do.  Your concerns and fears are unwarranted.

Finally, given that you tend to ask paranoid, unrealistic questions, I must warn you that further questions will no longer be accepted unless you have tested for HIV.  Future anxiety-driven, unrealistic questions may be deleted without an answer and without return of your posting fees.

This thread will be closed shortly.  There will be no further responses.  EWH
