[Question #5127] More concerns on herpes

Dr Terri, although you reassured that oral herpes can be presented only as blister and ulcer and scab, the STD. Gov websites stated that sometimes it can appear as mild redness or radom burn or something else. They even showed a pic of a girl with red area if you scroll down the page.

I have kissed my wife numerous number of times however I never had a problem and she never had a partner if at all herpes comes she should  get it thru  her parents and they don’t have any of this problem as they have been monogamous their entire life and herpes is not that prevalent in India.

  1. It makes me wonder could it still be herpes?  I would really appreciate if you could take one look to get a feel of what I am saying..
  2. https://m.imgur.com/a/Gkcqj1s
  3. I have stopped being intimate with my wife for the last few years as we had problems but I still like her. The breast exposure I had in between few times with a stranger and sexual encounter.
  4. This has been mind bothering and I am not able to focus partially it is also related to my guilt for committing a mistake. I feel random mouth lip burning once a day and twitching once in few days which freaks me out.
  5. Do you suggest an antibody testing or something or advise western blot again?
  6. I did not swab that red area which felt painfully slightly when touch and I felt like a hard bump inside the lip area when I had that redness. This is not a typical manifestation as you say but can they show up a red hard bumps without liquid on lips? Do you agree?
  7. The STD website totally says something that contradicts your opinion. I am not questioning your reasoning but asking u to give me to throw some light. It started after a day or trimming my hair on my mustache, following that when itching I felt painful area slightly on mouth and two days it stayed painful and when pressed on lip it felt hard bump, slightly pained and ulcers. Pls help.

Last night I have also seen two red pimples with a lil watery with one on the thigh and the one the leg. The pimple is red and raised and it had some liquid in it I popped both of them. Did not pain much but i don’t see any ulcer. The area stayed red on thigh but the one of the leg (below knee healed up almost) the one above knee still Shows redness almost size of dime coin but did not ulcerate again.

1. Should I get these swabbed? Although my western blot was negative for both hsv1 and 2 and no genital sex for after the testing?

2. Every pimple is kind of freaking me out. What would be your suggestion Dr Terri?

3. Itching is bothering so I bathed with hibiclens it seem to help with the itching however the thighs r itching and after itching in a day or two I see these pimples. They r not too big nor they look like clusters so just like typical pimples. What would u advise?

4. Just ignore or get them tested. Is western blot 99.5% accurate?

5.  If so should I trust my result after repeated iggs negative for hsv1 and 2? The thought feels slightly burning.

I did not say herpes would only present as a blister, ulcer or scab, though that is most often true with new infection.  With recurrences, it can also appear as a crack, a fissure or even a raised red area that resolves without making a sore.

1.  I cannot know if you have herpes or not but your behavior did not put you at risk for herpes.
2.  We don't look at photos on this website, sorry
3.  If you are not having sex with your wife due to this concern, that is unnecessary.
4.  I think this is unrelated to herpes
5.  I do not advise antibody testing at this time, no
6.  I agree that herpes has many possible manifestations, yes
7.  If you have something that worries you, you can have it swab tested.  You could have had oral herpes since childhood - I have not been addressing that issue with you, only the behavior you were concerned about.

Hello Terri,
Sorry if my questions were frustrating.

1. As you say that I might have this since childhood how can we find it out and that was the first sore I got on my mouth ever?

I did a mistake as I felt it did not look or feel like a typical sore and I did not get the swab even though I had it on my mouth it was so stupid.

2. The sore usually last for 3 minimum days right? I had this for almost 3.5 days. Started on Wednesday night and got to normal by Sunday morning. Have you ever seen the primary sore showing up and vanishing so early?

3. The western blot for hsv1 cannot be relied upon?

4. I know it misses about 4-5% of the cases out of 100%. Is this true? Could I be one of them in such case?

4. I kissed my wife for several years almost for 3.5 years. So when tested in between I was negative for hsv1 last September via WB. Following that I had 2 or 3 breast exposures so you feel this won’t cause any transmission.

5. How reliable are the HSV2 WB testing? 99.5%?

6. I need to get rid of this worry from my head not sure how to get better assurance as every testing we do does not give the confidence.

7. Can I share pictures on the westoverheights  website of yours? Rather than showing it here? Just to know your opinion about how it looked like?

8. The redness I explained does not even came like a raised bump.  It is just redness so have we seen some thing like that for people with oral herpes historically?

9. Pls tell me how do I assure myself moving forward and I can get the issue out of my mind? Thanks.

Appreciate your feedback.

You cannot find this out

I did a mistake as I felt it did not look or feel like a typical sore and I did not get the swab even though I had it on my mouth it was so stupid.

2. The sore usually last for 3 minimum days right? I had this for almost 3.5 days. Started on Wednesday night and got to normal by Sunday morning. Have you ever seen the primary sore showing up and vanishing so early?

No

3. The western blot for hsv1 cannot be relied upon?

Yes!  I did not look back at your records - you got a negative western blot?  The western blot can miss 4-5 cases of HSV 1, correct

4. I know it misses about 4-5% of the cases out of 100%. Is this true? Could I be one of them in such case?
You could

4. I kissed my wife for several years almost for 3.5 years. So when tested in between I was negative for hsv1 last September via WB. Following that I had 2 or 3 breast exposures so you feel this won’t cause any transmission.

Correct

5. How reliable are the HSV2 WB testing? 99.5%?

99.9

6. I need to get rid of this worry from my head not sure how to get better assurance as every testing we do does not give the confidence.

You should take reassurance more from the fact that your experience did not present any risk at all, if the tests are not perfect.

7. Can I share pictures on the westoverheights  website of yours? Rather than showing it here? Just to know your opinion about how it looked like?
No

8. The redness I explained does not even came like a raised bump.  It is just redness so have we seen some thing like that for people with oral herpes historically?

That is rare for oral herpes, to be only red

9. Pls tell me how do I assure myself moving forward and I can get the issue out of my mind? Thanks.

Your experience did not  have a risk for herpes transmission.  But then I've told you that repeatedly and you can't seem to believe it.  I'm so sorry this is still bothering you but at this point, your worry is obsessive and not realistic.

This will be the final post I will answer for you. Any further posts will be deleted as they are anxiety driven and not allowed on this site.
