[Question #5148] Exposed Lapdance

Hello,

About 5 days ago I went to a strip club and recieved a lap dance from a stripper. The stripper was completely nude and during the course of the lap dance she pulled out my penis through my boxers (just the shaft and tip were exposed) and proceeded to grind on them.  Though I had some things to drink I made sure that there was NO penetration of any kind.  The duration of the lap dance was no more than 20 mins. I’m not sure but the stripper could have been a little wet and if so that fluid would have come into contact with my penis.  What I would like to know is if I am at any risk for contracting HIV or any other STI’s through the events that happened.

Welcome to the forum. Thanks for your confidence in our services.

Some questions can be answered pretty accurately based only on the information in the title of the question, before reading anything else. That's almost the case here. Nobody has ever been known to catch HIV or any other STD during a lap dance, if it did not include insertion of the dance recipient's penis into the dancer's vagina, rectum, or mouth. Some STDs are transmitted by skin contact (syphilis, HPV, herpes), which is true. But that doesn't mean that any skin contact can do it. The skin contact generally must be prolonged and vigorous:  if the STD bacteria and virus are not massaged into the exposed skin, infection doesn't take hold.

So the question here is whether or not to consider your penile contact with the dancer's genital area (i.e. grinding) to be prolonged or vigorous. Even if so, the risk is miniscule. Certainly in my 4+ decades in the STD business, I've never seen or heard of a patient who required any STD from the sorts of events you describe. For sure there is zero risk for HIV.

Accordingly, you really needn't be worried at all and I do not recommend testing for anything. If you have a regular partner, you can safely continue your usual sexual practices without risk of transmitting anything.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you Doctor for thoroughly answering my question. I tried to call a hotline and ask this but the nurse there sounded like she was reading from a script and could not answer by question. You are a life saver!

Just one follow up question. I applied some hand sanitizer to my penis maybe 5 minutes after the fact (probably not a good idea as it burned a bit). Does that increase my chances of catching any STDs?

Not sure which hotline you called, but CDC's national STD/HIV hotline is more of a coldline. Several years ago, CDC canceled its contract with ASHA (the sponsor of this forum), which did an excellent job. The company they hired pays minimum wage for untrained persons who are taught to follow scripts as the answers to standard questions. They really can't answer questions about any sort of exposure or symptom out of the ordinary, except to advise people to contact their doctors.

The hand sanitizer made no significant difference one way or the other. When the risk is zero or close to it, nothing is likely to either raise or further lower the risk.
