[Question #5188] Treatment options for HSV2 with a weak immune system

What are the specific treatment options for someone with Herpes and a weak immune system? I am familiar with antivirals- looking for specifics. I would like to suppress all symptoms as best as possible.  What is the effectiveness of treatment with a weakened immune system?

Generally speaking, the treatment for herpes is the same whether you have a normal or a slightly weakened one.  When you say that your immune system is weakened, are you undergoing chemotherapy or have advanced HIV infection?  There are other drugs for someone who has very significant immune dysfuctions but they are usually limited to that population due to more significant side effects.  If you can help me with what type of immune suppression you have, it would be helpful, and also what you have tried as well and how that worked for you.

Terri, I am not undergoing chemo and do not have HIV, however, I have battled my immune system my entire life. I am currently extremely careful and able to manage it with diet and exercise but as I understand it the immune system is paramount in battling HSV.  My partner has HSV2- I currently do not but would expect to eventually contract it. I am concerned that the antivirals will not be effective enough with my immune system and fast paced/ high stress lifestyle. Do you have any research that points to the effectiveness of antivirals in suppressing the symptoms of HSV2 in patients with weak immune systems? Also any experience with an exact regime that would be effective?

I still do not understand why your immune system is "weak".  Unless a person is taking steroids for some reason I think the normal regimen would work well - either 500 or 1000 mg of valacyclovir once a day should work, or if it doesn't work well enough, 500 mg twice a day instead.  That's IF you become infected.  And your partner should be taking suppression of course
