[Question #5193] Oral sex Hiv Std

Hi Dr..
I am very concerned about an oral sex event that happened in October 2018. I had brief oral sex with a man. I’m a woman . About 1 min at the most. With a young man . I have a regular partner but we have been going through bad times.3 weeks after I had a vomiting bug and so did my regular partner at the same time as I . This past and I had all kinds of strange things .Pain in foot . I thought my neck and groin lymph nodes were swollen but my Dr said not. I thought it was Hiv . I have had 3 Insti tests . Four Biosure tests my last at 16 weeks. I also had a self test that you send blood to a trusted laboratory in UK which was ab Ag  test also negative at 16 weeks called Superdrug. I have developed something in my throat that is sore and a very unusual feeling like I have open sores. On my neck I also have two itchy sores which I can provide a picture. Like a white line with itchy spots  I have taken throat swabs three times . One with the Beckton Dickinson viper system platform. . For Oral Gonorrhoea and chlamydia. They are home tests you send to a laboratory. Negative . I took a good sample.  I have also taken home tests with Superdrug UK which was negative. I have also sent blood for syphilis. Hiv 1&2 ag ab 24 for at 16 weeks. All negative. I also have pain in the back of my legs .. like nerve pain . I don’t know what’s happening to me and I don’t know if all these tests are reliable. The leg pain and throat issues have have lasted over 6 months now .Please help as I’m going crazy with worry . My dr suggested I go to see an ENT but I know all of this has happened since I had oral sex with this young man. Could the oral tests have missed something ?? Could I have a hiv and the tests are not correct. I am lost.. I just want to know what is happening . So upset now . Please help me  Thank you

Welcome. Thank you for your confidence in our services.

I'm assuming the oral sex event you are concerned about was by you, i.e. fellatio on your male partner -- and not cunnilingus, i.e. oral contact with your genital area. It wouldn't make a lot of diference, becauise your risk was low -- but if anything, cunnilingus is even lower risk.

The first thing to know is that oral sex is safe sex. It isn't entirely free of risk, but the frequency of all STDs is low (much lower than for vaginal or anal sex) and it's virtually zero for some of them. Second, your symptoms are not typical for HIV or any other STD. Third, the tests you had are extremely reliable. You can be 100% confident you do not have HIV, syphilis, or oral gonorrhea or chlamydia.

We're generally not in the business of trying to figure out the causes of symptoms when HIV and other STDs have been excluded. But I will say that much of what you describe suggest you are experiencing anxiety-magnified trivial symptoms or even entirely normal body sensations that otherwise would not be bothersome and perhaps not even noticed. Of course I have no way to know whether there might be other potential causes -- that would take careful medical history, physical examination, and perhaps some additional lab tests for non-infectious problems. But for sure you do not have any STD from the oral sex event last October. If your symptoms are related to that event, it is because of anxiety or worry about the event -- or about a sexual decision you apparently regret -- and not an infection from that event.

I hope this information is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you for your fast reply much appreciated.
Could I just clarify my symptoms which started with sore throat then the vomiting bug which I had a temperature and shivers nausea lasted over a week.Since then I was left with this sore throat and sore feelings under chin and both sides of neck.Feels like maybe ulcers in throat.Im now having pain that goes into the top and back of head and sometimes into my ear.
I also have sore frenulum under tongue.
Also my pain in top ,back ,and inner thighs, under buttocks ,around groin area.It feels very sensitive burning and cut feeling sometimes.I forgotten to mention a sore area top of leg that joins hip .. feels puffy and stringy and over this I’ve had like a patch of dermatitis. I’ve had similar patch dermatitis on neck .. was wondering if it could be LV.
When I sit down I feel like I’m sitting on stones. I have little pea lumps.
I think my questions are
Could the home tests for NG and CT which I sent to lab have missed something.. like maybe it’s travelled into larynx and the throat areas are not deep enough.. although I would of thought tonsil area would show something.?
Hiv could the home tests and lab test that I sent blood to lab have missed some rare type of hiv or I haven’t made antibodies?
Are the Biosure tests at home good enough as stand alone tests?
Most of the tests I have taken are ones that I do at home and send to labs besides the Hiv.
Sorry to talk of so many symptoms but I just can’t find an answer and since this has only happened since this man.. I was in good health previously.
Thank you for your time.

The tests you had are conclusive. Therefore, your symptoms and the details of your exposure don't matter:  as I said above, however high the risk and however typical the symptoms, the tests prove you were not infected. And anyway, none of your symptoms -- not one of them -- fits well with gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, syphlis, or any other STD.

Trust me on this:  your symptoms definitely are NOT from ANY infection from the sexual exposure you are concerned about. But see my comment above about a possible psychological connection to that event.

If you would like still further reassurance, consider contacting your partner and asking him to be tested. His anticipated negative results might help. But really, do your best to move on without worry! You're home free in regard to HIV and all STDs.
