[Question #5208] HSV IGG is now higher?

Hi I posted a question about a month ago
I had sex with my last partner starting on Jan 26th and ending on Feb 15th.
Feb 16th I noticed small sores at my vaginal opening and some red bumps on pubic bone area
Feb 17th I had pain in my vagina sores , fever and chills
Went to urgent care was diagnosed visually and told I had Genital herpes but no cultures done
Given one gram of Valtrex twice daily for 10 days
By the best day I had sores all over my vagina
I returned home on
2/25 although my GYN didn’t see any sores he did IGG & IGM testing for HSV1 & HSV2
IGM for type 1 & 2 was positive at 1.64
IGG for type1 was positive at 1.11
I was on my last day of Valtrex
On 3/26 I saw an infectious disease doctor
He ran another IGG for type1&2
My results are IGG for HSV1 positive at 12.70
My previous partner has been contacted and he has a negative IGG
I tested negative for HSV about 5 years ago
Since my divorce I have only had 3 partners
My question is did I test too soon for HSV2?
It’s been 7 weeks since my first Outbreak so far I haven’t had anymore sores.
From my testing which type do I have or should I rest in another 2 months?

You did test a bit early for HSV 2, yes, but with the dramatic elevation in your HSV 1 IgG, I would be quite sure your lesions were caused by HSV 1, not HSV 2. If you want more certainty, you can retest when 12 weeks have passed since your last sexual encounter. As you may know, type 1 recurs and sheds far less often than HSV 2 so of the two, a better diagnosis. The IgG test misses 30% of HSV 1 infections so it is likely that it missed it in your last partner, at least that is the most reasonable explanation here, given your 1.1 at the beginning of this.

Hi thank you for your prompt reply!
I meant my previous partner before this one in Jan
I was with him for 5 years until December of this year and he just tested negative for HSV1 & 2
The partner is question (guy I got it from) only admitted to being HSV1 positive orally
My question is , if I did my first IGG testing on the last day of taking 1 gram of Valtrex 2 x daily
Would that have suppressed my IGG levels to 1.11?
Glad to hear that HSV1 has a better prognosis
I will go ahead and retest for HSV2 in 5 weeks just in case

I think your IgG test was at 1.1 because you had brand new infection and had not yet made antibody. Yes go ahead and retest but if you keep taking Valtrex, you are going to confuse the situation quite a bit.

Ok thank you ! I haven’t taken Valtrex since initial Outbreak
Thankfully I haven’t had any reason to.
Will only take if I get another OB
For my mental well being I am going to stop testing It’s been a scary and extremely stressful experience and I’m just relieved it’s type1
I am back together with my previous partner and we are monogamous. Appreciate you taking the time to answer all my questions :)
