[Question #5237] Positive Herpes IGM

Hello Drs,
I have couple of question:
1- I asked my dr for a STD tests during my annual exams. He told I got my Herpes IGM positive, I am currently waiting to have the IGG test after 6 weeks of last sexual activity. I always follow safe sex. How often does IGM get false positive results and why? My IGM was 1.28.

2- Can people get Herpes 1 or 2 from massage and hanjobs? What if the masseuse touched a sore then continue the massage or used a contaminated used wet towels. I read that not a high risk but can I get an explanation why that’s a no or low risk? What does the herpes virus or any other stds need to be transmitted (away from an intercourse for sure).

Thanks much!

I would bet a lot of money that this is a false positive.  In my personal experience, 80-90% of positive IgM's are false positives.  The CDC says never to do them.  Sorry this happened to you.
You cannot get herpes from massages or handjobs.  The virus needs skin to skin contact to be transmitted.  it quickly dies off of the human body.  it takes a certain amount of virus to infect a person and not just ANY little virus.  The situations that you describe does not fit the requirements for transmission of this virus.

Thanks so much for you quick reply. Does that apply for both HSV-1 and 2?
