[Question #5285] Just diagnosed with HSV 2

My husband was just diagnosed with HSV 2 by a blood test.  We have been together 10 + years.  I have gone for a blood test  but have not received my results.   Is it possible that he could have contracted this before we got together and it lay dormant and I have not contracted it?

Before I can respond with any clarity, I need to know the number associated with his positive value. It is called an index value.
Assuming he is positive, he could have contracted this well before he met you, if he had had sex with anyone else prior to you.  And no, you might well not have contracted this, if indeed he is infected.  There are some false positives on this test - and be sure it was an IgG vs. IgM.  May I ask why he tested for herpes if you have been together for this long?  Did he have concerning symptoms?

His index value  is 8.2.  He did an IgG blood test. Yes, there were concerning lesions but by the time he went to the doctor they had gone away and swabbed negative.   Assuming I test negative, could I have some sort of immunity or are we going to have to take extra precautions when having sex so I don't contract it now that he's actively breaking out?

Have you received our test results yet?  If you are also positive, then there is no need to do anything differently.  If you are negative, he may wish to consider taking daily antiviral medicine to reduce the risk of infecting you.  However, if you have not gotten infected, you may actually have some immunity but it likely isn't perfect.
