[Question #5313] Chlamydia + Doxycycline

Hello,

I have had painful urination and blood in my semen. I visited a doctor for urine test and swab and my Chlamydia was positive.

The problem is, while I was waiting for the result, the doctor still prescribed me Doxycycline (since it also treats other infections I assume) so I did not know the cause (Chlamydia) for the first 3 days of taking the medicine. While I was unaware, I had sex with the person I got Chlamydia from once (without condom) on my 3rd day of taking Doxycycline and on the 4th day I got my results. I took the medicine for 10 day cycle of 2 pills a day. Should I be worried that during that 3rd day, I still could have gotten Chlamydia again? (while it was being treated)

In addition, after the same partner also found out, she took the 1 pill + a shot treatment (Not Doxycycline) we waited 2 weeks after her treatment and my Doxycycline treatment and had unprotected sex. Is this safe?

So there are 2 questions: 1. The possibility of getting Chlamydia again on the 3rd day of taking Doxycycline with a partner who has Chlamydia (unprotected) 2.  The possibility of having unprotected sex after 2 weeks after I got my Doxy treatment + she got her other type of treatment.

Apologies in advance if the question seems confusing.

I just want to make sure I don't have Chlamydia.

Welcome to our Forum.  thanks for your question.  The answers to you questions are a matter of timing.  I suspect that the pill your partner was treated with was azithromycin which, like doxycycline is highly effective for treatment of chlamydia.   Unlike doxycycline which must be taken for 7 days, a single 1.0 gram dose of azithromycin will cure chlamydia.  The fact that you both took different medicnes is fine, as long as they were both effective treatment for chlamydia.   If both of you took your treatment at about the same time you will both be cured but of course timing is critical.  thus:

1.  After three days of doxycycline you would be far less infectious and perhaps not infectious at all for your partner.  Completion of your course of antibiotics would have cured your infection.

2.  If your partner took azithromycin 1.0 gram (I would verify this) either a day or two before you had sex or anytime afterward, her chlamydia will be cured as well.  As for the results of treatment with other antibiotics, it would depend on what antibiotic and what does she received.  I suspect the shot she received was a medicine called ceftriaxone which does not cure chlamydia but is often given with azithromycin in case the person also had gonorrhea.

I hope this information is helpful.  If any of this is unclear please use your up to two follow-up questions for clarification.  EWH

Thank you for the quick response.
About #1. I am less worried that I was infectious for my partner but more worried that I can get Chlamydia AGAIN from her (since this is before she got her treatment) So to clarify, we had sex when I was on my 3rd day of taking Doxycycline where as my partner wasn't treated at all at that time. Is it possible to get Chlamydia again in this case? (I kept taking the medication for 6ish days after that time)

You would not get re-infected from having sex with an infected partner while taking doxycycline.  You are in the clear.  EWH---

Another quick question... after my treatment. I still feel a bit of discomfort after peeing. And slightly painful ejaculations. Is this something that takes time to get better? It got better and now slightly bad. Wondering if this means I have Chlamydia again...

The doxycycline that you took would have cured chlamydia. I am not sure what the origin of your discomfort is but you can be sure it is not chlamydia. I would give it a few days to see if it passes.

On our forum we provide up to three responses to our clients' questions. This is my third response. This thread will now be closed without further answers. Take care. EWH
