[Question #5338] Need Advice on STD's & HIV and mostly Peace of Mind

Hello Doctor’s,

I am a male in my late twenties in a long term committed relationship with a woman (we have unprotected sex). This weekend I did something I had never did before (and will never do again), I visited a Peepshow with booths. I was watching a video masturbating and I thought I was by myself when I felt something touch my bare leg. I looked down to find there was a hole in the wall with a dude’s arm touching me leg. He persisted and touched my leg once again for which I left the booth. On my way out I saw him and he told me he likes to perform oral sex on random guys. I told him no thank you and left. I used hand cleaner when I returned to my car and took a shower a couple hours later. Then I started to look on the net if this event could be risky. I looked up what the CDC said about “How is HIV passed from one person to another” and touching did not make the list (thank God). Then I looked at “how well does it survive outside the body” and It is not spread by “other sexual that don’t involve exchange of body fluids (touching)”Even after all of that I am still nervous over some dude touching my bare leg with his hands, I have no idea if he had blood, cum, precum on his hands or if he had an STD (HIV, HSV, Syphilis etc. )I have no open cuts or sores on my leg which I believe would help.

Am I at risk for STD’s (all of them)?

Do I need to get tested?

Can I still have unprotected sex with my girlfriend, I cannot out of the blue start wearing condoms!!!!!!

Welcome to the Forum.  thanks for your confidence in our service.  The events you describe are a no risk event.  STIs are not transmitted by touching, even if the person who is touching has genital secretions or infectious material on there body.  this was a no risk event with ne need for testing, no reason for concern.  There is no reason related to the events that you describe to not have unprotected sex with your wife.

I hope that this comment is helpful.  EWH

Dr. Hook,

Thank you for response, what a relief you have made me a very happy man !!!!

I read some of your and Dr. Handsfield's earlier posts and the only concern for a cut would be an open bleeding wound with a large amount of the fluid from the other person, is this correct?

STI's & STD's are the same thing (HIV is included in both)?

STI's transmitted by skin to skin (HSV & Syphillis etc. ) require direct contact and are not transmitted by hand (touching)?

No of these things happened to me but I just want to be more educated on the subject.

Bottom-line: "this was a no risk event with ne need for testing, no reason for concern.  There is no reason related to the events that you describe to not have unprotected sex with your wife".  ( The answer I wanted to hear)

Thank you

You are almost right.  Even with a large amount of fluid on a recent cut, there would be no reason for concern.  You'll be fine.

In answer to your questions:
1.  STIs and STDs are the same thing and do include HIV
2.  correct.  There needs to be direct lesion contact for transmission. These infections are not transmitted through transfer of material on a person's hand

As we already discuss, you ar ein the clear.  EWH
