[Question #5342] HIV Concern

Thank you for all that you do and sorry that I have felt that I needed to return.

I am just concern with a few symptoms I have encounter recently.

Last week on Saturday, I felt chills and had a fever not sure what degrees and also experience body aches. Sunday morning I felt warm,  but well enough to walk a little outside.  Later that evening I felt worse again, fever, chills and body aches. Monday I didn’t want to take any chances so I stayed home the entire day, took vitamin C and Ibuprofen.  Tuesday I decided to go into work although I felt nauseous and I passed out in my tube for a few seconds., no injuries caused. Tuesday I had no fever or Wednesday. I decided to visit the emergency room, because I felt three swollen lymph node behind my neck, one behind my right ear, one on the side of my neck and another on the back of my head. My head also felt tender and swollen. They did a full blood panel in which I appeared normal, my WBC seemed normal range 6.78. They said that maybe I was just battling something and this is why I had swollen lymph nodes. I can’t help to think that maybe something else is wrong. I had a HIV test a while back 46days (4th gen) from the encounter in question but I am wondering if it could have not detected the virus yet. Also felt a mild stomach pain for two days Wednesday & Thursday.

Have not had sex with anyone since the encounter in question.

It’s worrying me not knowing why I have swollen lymph nodes. Also like to add that they tested my Urine - negative that’s all the documents says.

Also want to add that for two days I have woken up with my skin red and dry, the best way to describe it is like I had a sun burn but I was not in the sun at all. A little itchy too.
And body aches.

Welcome back to the forum. I also am sorry you felt the need, especially because we really cannot help very much.

As discussed last time -- with detailed reasoning -- your test result prove you do not have HIV, and that therefore HIV is not a possible cause of your symtoms. They also are not suggestive of any other STD. Conceivably you acquired Epstein Barr virus (EBV, the cause of infectious mononucleosis) or cytomegalovirus (CMV) which also can cause mono-like illness. However, both of these are rarely acquired after age 20, so unless you're still in your teens, these are very unlikely. Accordingly, it is very unlikely that they are due to any infection from the sexual exposure you are concerned about. That doesn't mean they are totally unrelated to that event:  some if not most of your symptoms could be related to anxiety and worry over that event. But aside from the psyhological conntection, there is nothing from that even that could explain them.

In addition to EBV and CMV, any number of mild infections or other problems could cause the mild lymph node enlargements you describe. And most healthy adults have a few small lymph nodes that can be detected with careful examination But no STD does this. If your symptoms continue, you'll need to keep working with your doctor to evaluate possible causes. But for sure you can put HIV or viral hepatitis (including hepatitis C) out of your mind.

Sorry I can't give the conclusive answer you might be looking for, but I hope these comments are somewhat helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it very much. Like to provide you with some additional information.

I am 35 years old don’t know if this makes a difference in your earlier assessment. Also like to mention I am going to be visiting the doctor again to see what is going on with me. The last two days my entire body ached and my hand got a little swollen. I sat in hot water yesterday hoping it would help and it did. Today my neck pain is gone but my hands are still a little swollen and I feel knee pain. I am just confused with my previous blood work because they said everything appeared Normal and they only gave me Ibuprofen along with meds to prevent nauseousness. I was feel pretty nauseous.

What is worrying me is the small swollen lymph nodes and the joint pain I feel in my hands. I really hope that maybe all of this had nothing to do with the encounter I was worried about and it is not HIV. Sorry for sounding repetitive but I am scared. Also like to add that before I felt body aches I had pain on my right side just below my breast, wondering if this had anything to do with my liver. I don’t drink or do drugs but could it be due to a bad diet. I am just terrified and I am trying to find another answer. Thank again for your time and the work you do.

Also like to add that I visited doctor today and explained everything that has been going on. All she recommended was to continue to take ibuprofen because she believes I just have something viral. To wait another and see if I continue to experience symptoms.

Thanks for the additional information, but it does not change my opinions or advice. At your age, there is no need to test for EBV and CMV. Tests, if done, would be positive, Everybody your age has had these viruses and tests positive for them. They are not a likely cause of your symptoms. I speculated about it only because I didn't know your age. If I had, I would not have mentioned them. (You could mention them to your doctor, but I'm sure she will agree there is no reason for testing.)

This forum provides advice only about STDs and HIV. You have neither -- therefore I have nothing further to say about your symptoms, treatment, etc.

That concludes this thread. Repeated questions on the same topic are not permitted. This being your second, it will have to be your last. I hope the discussions have been helpful. Best wishes and stay safe.
