[Question #5379] Gave protected oral

Hi I'm a 32 year old married male from London,England. I am also a curious bisexual and I regretfully had an encounter with a male from a gay website(has a bf himself but obviously plays away a lot) I am quite an anxious person and thought to always be 100% safe except for my wife. My encounter consisted of giving the guy in question a blow job with a condom that stayed intact the entire time(no other encounter) Due to my anxiety and guilt I went to get tested for all stds which came back clear (genital) but I got a call from the NHS explaining that I may need a retest for a throat swab. The result came back neither positive or negative for Chlamydia (they called it a terminology beginning with 'c' sounded like clifegeral ) She stated that they did not find any Chlamydia otherwise it would of been positive but something may of come up that triggered the need to come back. She seemed relax about having me back as I feel she was unaware of my M2M act. Since I was clear for everything else and my low risk event I continued to have non protected sex with my wife. Questions I like to ask is.

1) Was I at risk for an std giving oral using a condom that stayed intact the entire time?

2) Is my wife at risk? again the result wasn't positive but if there was anything in my throat could I have passed this to her via cunnilingus?

3) I waited a while before I was tested and in the meantime I had sex with my wife. Surely if I did have anything and was passed it would of then be passed to my urethra but my urethra test was negative. Appreciate your advice on this matter.

Welcome to our Forum.  The encounter you describe certainly sounds like a no risk event for all STIs and had you asked, I probably would have told you that no testing was needed.  The partial message you have described now has you concerned and my first suggestion would be to call back and find out what the word you did not understand was.  It may have been the word equivocal.  I would not be worried.  In answer to your specific questions:
1.  No, the condom would have provided complete protection from infection, if your partner was even infected (statistically he was probably not).
2.  No
3.  If your throat was infected, the infection would have stayed there.  STIs occurring at one mucosal location do not spread to other site- i.e. a throat infection would not have spread to your urethra.

I am confident that this will all turn out fine.  I suspect the problem had more to do with a problem in the lab than any problem you might have had.  EWH

Thank you Dr Hook for getting back to me so quickly. Yes the word I heard was definitely equivacol now you say it,what does that mean? My point no. 3 I know it cannot spread but what I meant was surely I would of given it to my wife through cunnilingus then back to me?My event happened around 12 weeks ago and I got tested around 3/4weeks ago and a full screening came back clear except the equivacol result. I have always followed Dr Handsfield and yourselves fine expert work on this matter. Is Chlamydia in oral sex still almost non apparent?  even in M2M contact? also any oral I have had now or in the past with a condom was 100% safe and my wife is not at risk at all? Would be safe to say I can resume sex with her as I have without putting her health at risk?

The equivocal result is more likely to a lab problem than anything else.

Your additional followup, questions betray your anxiety/panic.  Pharyngeal chlamydial, infections are rare and there is no indication that they are transmitted through cunnilingus.

As I already told you, the sex you described was safe sex.  I see no reason to not have sex with your wife.  EWH

Thank you ever so much! I am thinking just to put this all behind me as all my other tests were negative. Before I go if the very small chance there is something in my throat like Chlameydia, can it go away on its own without harm? if so how long does it take? Adding to the point it is not passed through cunnilingus, there is no way present or not it can harm my wife? Sorry for the added questions I just want to get the most of your expert time before this conversation closes. I believe this is my last allowed reply so I hope you will answer my final questions. I was thinking about buying a private throat swab but feel that this would now be a waste of time and money. Have a great day and I wish you well in the future.

Sigh.  You really need to get a grip on yourself and control your anxiety/guilt.   I have already told you this was the only bogus could vent and I am confident that when your test is repeated it will be negative.

Since you will find that you do not have chlamydia the information I am about to provide you is for your information only. Chlamydia infections including active throat are usually asymptomatic. Overtime without treatment on the real infections will go away.  As I have already said, there is no reason to suspect that your wife is at risk because of the encounter you describe.  As you suggest purchasing private testing would be a waste of your time and money.

I hope the information I have provided will be helpful to you. Please don't worry. As you have indicated because this is my third response to your questions, this will complete this thread and the thread will be closed shortly. Take care. EWH
