[Question #5496] Cunnlingus

Do I need to be concerned about STDs from a 5 -10 second exposure of cunnilingus while on period?

Welcome back. I'm glad to see you seem to be past your past pattern of frequent, perhaps anxiety-driven questions.

Cunnlingus is low risk, both for the genital/vaginal partner and the oral partner. Oral STDs are much less common than genital infections and there is no contact with the throat, which is where most oral STDs reside (and saliva itself rarely transmits them). There could be small risk of those infections transmitted skin to skin and that happen to be active on this lips or tongue (herpes due to HSV1, syphilis, maybe rarely for HPV). Herpes is probably the greatest single risk but still very low. Presence of menstrual blood makes no difference in risk of catching or transmitting any STD, including HIV.

Of course you have said nothing about your partner, so I cannot judge that aspect of your risk from this event. But with the overall low risk and such a brief exposure, there is almost no chance you acquired any STD. I wouldn't worry about it and recommend against being tested for anything.

I hope this reply has been helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thanks, but that doesn't say anything about his ssexula lifestyle -- no. of likely partners, drug use, sex with men, past STD history. But it doesn't make much difference, since cunnilingus is such low risk, as disussed above. So this doesn't change my opinions or advice.---
