[Question #5631] Hard Bump

Hello doc -- sorry I am back here; this question is legit. I just noticed a rather large hard bump at the very base of my penis, actually more in the pubic hair area in an area where the condom may have not protected the skin. It's not in clusters - it's one rather big bump right at the base there -- no pain or itching, but hard to the touch. I had protected sex 5 days ago so I'm a bit shocked, although this may be an area of skin to skin contact that the penis didn't roll down to. Any idea what this could be? I understood that herpes is technically possible even with protected sex, but I understood that usually displays in clusters, as does HPV?

Welcome back to the forum.

No STD causes this sort of problem. Based on the location and your description, I suspect you have a sebaceous cyst and that the timing is coincidental with your recent sexual exposure. I also wonder whether it really appeared so rapidly:  often after an event that draws someone's attention or causes anxiety, it is common to first notice symptoms or other issues in the area that in fact have been present quite a while. It seems unlikely that a "rather large" (how big?) painless skin lump could develop in under 5 days. For sure this is not HPV or herpes.

You'll need to be professionally examined to figure this out. But until that's done, I really wouldn't be worried about any STD as the cause.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you, Dr. Handsfield. I actuallyjust came back from the clinic and the doctor also said it was a cyst, big enough to prescribe antibiotics to be safe, but also was confident it was a cyst and not an STD. Can close this one out; thanks again.
