If my partner has an outbreak, how long should we wait until we can have sex again? I read online it is a 12 day period, is that accurate? Am I protected if I wear a condom during an outbreak?

The thing is, people with herpes can give off virus when they do and when the don't have an outbreak.  So asking what is the right amount of days to wait to have sex after an outbreak really doesn't address the underlying issue of asymptomatic viral shedding.  Some people do this shedding before an outbreak, some after, and we know about half of viral shedding happens not close to an outbreak.  In terms of timing, I would say that you should wait to have sex until new skin has replaced the outbreak AND your partner is comfortable.  But there is not a day that your partner can say to you "I know that today I will not infect you".  If your partner is on daily antiviral medicine, it will reduce both the risk of transmission AND reduce the frequency of outbreaks for your partner.
