[Question #5639] HCV1

Married 34 years. Recently had a sore on my penis I though was from rubbing against my bathing suit that didn't go away.  Got tested for HCV and tested positive for HCV1 with 47.4 IgG. Only 3 women have ever performed oral sex on me and 2 were prior to being married the other was my wife ( only a handful of times in 34 years) I think my wife has had a fever blister before so she may be HCV1 positive.  Does my IgG score say anything about when I contacted this? I'm not sure how to approach my wife of if there is any risk for either of us. Can you help?

First, I think that you actually mean HSV (herpes simplex virus) not HCV (hepatitis C virus).
Your HSV 1 index value only indicates that you have been infected for a while and it was likely acquired during receiving oral sex.  If your wife has ever had a cold sore or fever blister then she is infected with HSV 1 and is EXTREMELY unlikely to acquire this genitally from you.  I think this can be a no=problem issue for both of you.  And as you have seen HSV 1 genitally doesn't recur often at all.

Thanks Teri and that's correct it is HSV1. Could it have been contracted before I was even married 30+ years ago and just now show symptoms? How often might it reoccur?  Does the higher score mean it has been in my body a long time?

The high score means it has been quite a while yes but no way to know how long.  You could have had it well before you were married or you could have gotten this from your wife giving you oral sex, there is just no way to know.  Most HSV 1 genital infections are not very active - the usual frequency is about once every other year but for you, that appear to be much lower.  That's a good thing!

Teri so I have a follow up.  I have had a rash on the head of my penis for 4 weeks now. It has not ever looked like the pictures of genital HSV1 I have seen online.  I never had any blisters , it's just shiny red and burns from time to time.  I also have a rash in my groin area so I went to my Dr. And he thinks it's a fungal infection on my groin that also spread to my penis.  I have been on anti fungal oral medication for a week but still have the same issue.  Obviously my IgG score shows I have HSV1 but I just want to make sure what I am experiencing is not genital HSV1. Does HSV1 always have blisters or could it just be a red rash and would it last this long?

Your red rash sounds absolutely nothing like herpes and everything like a fungal infection.  I don't know what it isn't getting better with treatment but you might want to consider seeing a dermatologist for another opinion.  Herpes outbreak do NOT last 4 weeks, like this, with this presentation, absolutely not.
