[Question #5668] HSV1 Genital Herpes from Oral Sex

Hi! I’ve had HSV1 oral since I was 13-I ‘m
now 50. My first outbreak was horrible. My question is what is the
likely that I would get infected with HSV1 genital herpes from receiving oral
sex? The person I was with also has HSV1 oral. He got it when he
as 18 he’s 30 now. I was tested for everything 10 weeks after the event.
My HSV1 (HSV (1+2) IGG AB, Serum) came back already having antibodies to HSV-1 (which
I already knew) and no new or old infection with HSV-2. -My HSV2 came back neg. (IGG test). I also had
an HSV 1 AND 2 IGM ABS, INDIRECT that came back normal.
I was neg. for everything else. I am 95 days in with no outbreak and my
doctor has been monitoring me. I have been told by my doctor I do
NOT have genital herpes. What do you think? Should I be
tested again or just move on? I do NOT want to give genital herpes to my
husband.

The likelihood that you would acquire HSV 1 genitally after having it orally for all those years is incredibly small. I have seen it once in 35 years of practice. Why do you think you have genital herpes?

HI Terri Thank you for the quick response. I was just very worried because I had heard that you can get HSV1 genital oral.I also read from past post not that the index number is not to worry about positive or neg. Mine is positive because I know I have HSV1 oral. I'm married and don't want to give anything to my husband. I assume at this point I don't have it and should move on? I was also tested for HSV2 10 weeks after and that came back neg. Enough time? no outbreaks. I was tested for everything all neg 10 weeks in. If you tell me to move on that's my plan.

Sorry need to add 3 more things to my reply - 1. the person I was with had a cold sore that I didn't even see he told me about it. he said approx. had it 10 days and scabbed over but I didn't even see it. I assume with everything I've told you I don't have hsv1 genital? 2. I also was tested for hsv2 that came neg. 10 weeks after event sex too just once. I do trust this person he's never had a genital outbreak and he went to get tested for everything outside of herpes (this is not the his docs practice to do). All of his tests came back neg. 3. Actually I had a complete std check all came out neg. 10 weeks later. as I stated i'm 95 days with no outbreak. I was tested in my 30's for HSV2 neg then too. Just want to feel comfortable not giving genital herpes to my husband. Thank you for everything!

While HSV 1 can also be genital, that is correct, it would almost never happen in a person who had a history of cold sores.
I don't see any reason why you should be concerned about giving your husband genital herpes. You do know, however, that it is possible that you can transfer virus from your mouth (cold sores) to his penis by giving him oral sex, right? Does he get cold sores also?

Hi Terri-Thank you. Yes, my husband gets sores in his mouth he said he got them after kissing this woman 20 years ago. He believes he has HSV1 oral.
I feel much better!
I have been tested for HSV2 (IGG), and all other std's (HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphlis, trich) 10 weeks after exposure to having sex when this person one time unprotected. All results came back neg. I had my last HSV2 test in my early 30's that came back neg. I assume I waited enough time for each? As I mentioned earlier, I've had no genital outbreaks. I just want to make sure 10 weeks is enough time and can rest:)
You are the best, and I really appreciate this forum!

I think 10 weeks in you situation, with a prior HSV 1 infection, is plenty of time. You waited long enough previously also.
I'm so glad the forum was helpful for you!
