[Question #5746] HIV test results

I see Dr.Handsfield and Dr.Hook 's response before I post this question but want to check. I had unprotected sex 6 weeks ago with someone I don't know, made a mistake and now feeling anxious. I took a HIV RNA test on on 14th and 36th day and HIV4th gen test on 29th and 43rd day, all were negative and non reactive. I read some comments online and many are still saying that 12 weeks is conclusive.

Does the window period change based on type of exposure and person. Or at this point can anyone with any type of exposure be conclusive after a negative 6week hiv 4th gen test(No PEP).

Welcome t the Forum and thanks for your question.  Your question is a good one and gets to an issue that many of our clients worry about.  the performance of tests for HIV, including both HIV RNA tests and 4th generation, combination HIV antigen antibody tests perform the same in all persons. Thus, for all persons who have not been taking HIV PrEP or PEP, results of an RNA test are very, very accurate any time more than 11 days after exposure and the results of 4th generation tests are conclusive at 6 weeks.  Any statements suggesting that results are not conclusive until 12 weeks after exposure are long out of date and wrong.

Thanks again for your excellent question.  I hope the information above is helpful.  EWH

Yes. Your results are entirely conclusive. There is no reason not to return to your normal sexual activities with your regular partner. Capital EWH ---
