[Question #5846] HSV-1 Gentital Herpes

I received oral sex from my HSV-1 positive partner and was infected gentially.  At the time, I had a wound/cut on my penis .  Would this have increased the chance of infection?

Also, do you think I should Valtrex daily medication to prevent transmission since the risk is low already for HSV-1 genital transmission?  Maybe for the first year it might be a good idea since I was recently infected almost 3 months ago.

It is possible that the opening on your penis skin facilitated the transmission of HSV 1 to your penis, yes
I would say that suppression in the first year, in terms of transmission, might not be a bad idea, yes But if your partner is already infected with HSV 1 and infected you, then there is no need for suppression to reduce the risk of infecting them genitally. Once you have an oral infection it is extremely unlikely that you would then become infected genitally. Am I understanding your situation correctly? Terri---

Thank you Terri.  I am no longer with that same partner so it would be for any future partners that I would be concerned about transmitting the virus to.  So taking the daily Valtrex for a year you think would be wise, what about indefinitely? Does this help with the GH HSV-1 suppression?  Also, the "feeling" I have down in my testicle/penis region I believe is related to the recent herpes infection per my doctor.  She said that it means the virus is "active"  and mentioned some word that began with a "P" but not necessarily meaning that it will cause an outbreak.  She said it would be good to take the Valtrex to suppress the virus, do you agree with this?  I ordered your book online, very interesting and great read!  I also downloaded your herpes handbook from Westover heights website!  You are the herpes Nostradamus :). Lastly, do you think they will ever come out with a vaccination or a cure to HSV-1 and/or HSV-2, any new updates on that?

Also I am usually one to let my body naturally build immunity to things.  Is it better to not take daily Valtrex and abstain from any sexually activity to let your body build up more antibodies to the virus or is that not the case?

I think she is talking about prodrome, the feeling some people have before an outbreak.
If you aren't sexually active with anyone, I think it might be a good idea to not take Valtrex every day for now and let your body make it's own immune response and if you get an outbreak, treat the outbreak and then come off.  When you are once again with someone, you can start taking the medicine daily if they are negative for HSV 1.
I see no reason to suppress the virus now.  HSV 1 genitally is pretty quiet all by itself.
So glad you found the reading helpful!
