[Question #5863] Genital HSV 1

My partner recently had a new onset genital herpes outbreak which tested positive for HSV1. We are trying to move forward but it’s kind of confusing on what we can and can’t do to be safe and if anything we do could cause more outbreaks.

I have HSV1 already(have had cold sores all my life but haven’t had one in years), but have never had it genitally. They have already taken the Valtrex and the initial outbreak has cleared up.

Under the premise of me not having any sores on my mouth and them not having any genital sores at the time, can I still give them oral sex safely since I have already had HSV1 my whole life or could this cause a potential outbreak for either of us(me an oral outbreak or them a genital outbreak)?

Also do we need to use a condom to prevent me from getting it genitally or would that cause me to get a possible genital HSV1 outbreak being that I’ve only had oral HSV1  in my lifetime?

It’s just confusing because they have never had cold sores and only this recent new onset genital outbreak, while I have only had it orally with cold sores since I was a kid. We presume the same virus regardless of what area of the body, but just want to be safe moving forward and do everything possible to prevent further outbreaks. Both questions under the premise of neither of us having any sores at the time.

Since you both now have HSV 1, the risk of you getting HSV 1 at a new location is just incredibly small!  If I were in your situation, I wouldn't let this prevent me from doing anything sexually with this partner.  For now, until your partner has mounted a good immune response, which might take a few months, there is still a small risk of them getting it orally as well but in the future, event that will not be a risk.

Thanks for your reply. Just so I’m clear, me giving them oral sex does or does not “increase the chances” of them having another genital outbreak in the following days after that? Under the premise of neither of us having an active sore at the time, same as before.

That's correct, it does not increase the chances of them having another outbreak in the following days.  Each of your immune systems will handle the virus in it's own way
