[Question #5910] I used a condom but am still worried

Hello Doctor,

I recently had oral sex performed on me and used a condom.  But I still feel a constant urge to urinate and my bladder doesn't seem to completely evacuate.  I don't have any discharge but I still feel like I may have contracted something.  I felt this way almost immediately after the event.  It's gotten a lot better, but I still feel like I'm urinating more then is normal.  During fellatio I watched to make sure the condom didn't break, and it didn't.  But again it just seems weird.  Have you ever heard of anything like this?

Welcome to our Forum.  I'll be glad to comment and hope that the information I provide will be helpful to you.  You don't mention how long it has been since your received oral sex or anything about your partner but I think the generalizations and facts I am about to provide may be helpful.  First, no matter who your partner was, most people do not have oral STIs and amongst potential sexual exposures, unprotected oral sex is an inefficient process in which even most unprotected exposures do not lead to infection.  In your case, your exposure was condom protected and as long as the condom was in place throughout the exposure and did not break (and yours did not- when condoms break, they break wide open leaving no doubt that they have failed).  Thus, the exposure your describe was one which I would characterize as virtually no risk with no need for concern and for testing.

As far as the symptoms you describe- these symptoms are not symptoms of STIs.  Urinary frequency and a sensation that your bladder does not empty is a sign of anxiety and is not associated with STIs.  I urge you not to worry about STIs.  If you feel you need further reassurance, a urine test for gonorrhea and chlamydia is highly reliable and I am confident will validate what I have just said.

I hope that this information is helpful.  EWH
