[Question #6002] Unprotected oral sex on man - white spots on throat/tonsil

I just recently had a thread on this, but I'd like a new thread to focus on whether my symptoms are herpes because I'm already on antibiotics if it's bacterial.

Background:
I performed unprotected oral sex on a random black man on 9/8; he could very well have STDs.  I started feeling throat stiffness 1 day later and it continued.  On 9/12, I started feeling slight weirdness on the right side of my throat.  I looked and saw a few white spots on my tonsil and neighboring throat area.  If I run my tongue over them, it doesn't hurt.  It doesn't hurt to swallow.  I can just feel something isn't right on the right side of my throat.  As I indicated on my previous thread, the oral sex I performed was like 10 seconds and very light.  I didn't go deep at all, so his penis didn't touch the back of my throat.  I also briefly inspected his penis and didn't see any irregularities.

What's the likelihood that this is, in fact, herpes?

I think the chances that this could be herpes are almost zero!  Your contact was very brief and you've not developed any lesions around the exterior of your mouth.  I reviewed your discussion with Dr. Handsfield and agree that an STI in your throat is extremely unlikely.   If you can, I would like you to feel reassured that two STI experts do NOT think that this is herpes.  The type of sexual contact (no deep oral sex) just doesn't fit with oral herpes.  It is OK to ask partners to use a condom for giving oral sex if this issue comes up again.  It's difficult to have these worries and had a condom been used (I know, it's not quite the same), there would have been no risk (vs. very very close to zero risk).  Tuck one in your wallet - just in case!

Thanks for using our forum.  Please let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks Terri!  It's very reassuring to hear it from both of you.  I didn't mean any disrespect to Dr. Handsfield, but you know how anxious people get :).  Every time I do something stupid like this, it teaches me a lesson to never do anything unsafe.  I realize my activities are relatively low risk, but the thought of contracting something makes me feel dirty.

I agree that with no sores forming where the penis touched my mouth (i.e., inside of my lips), or anywhere on my lips, would seem to indicate it not being herpes.  But then I started reading other sites that say white spots on your throat can be oral herpes, I kind of freaked out.

I've been blood-tested throughout my life for HSV1 and 2, and I've always showed up negative.  My last test was in December of 2018.  If I were to have an initial outbreak, wouldn't I likely have other flu-like symptoms in addition to blisters?

I totally understand your motivation here, no worries at all.
Some people get flu like symptoms while others do not.  Luckily for you, you have neither blisters not flu symptoms!
