[Question #6047] HIV

Had a question I was in Las Vegas in late March and did something not smart I had oral sex with a prostitute both giving and receiving earlier in the night I brushed my teeth and had a little bleeding gums. On May 12th I had a HIV test that came back negative. Should I still be worried because I’m having night sweats and I’ve done full blood panels and everything is normal and I’ve read night sweats could be associated with HIV.
1. Is there risk with oral sex?
2. Did I wait enough time March 26th tested on May12th would it have shown up?

Welcome to our Forum. thanks for your question. The exposures you describe are very, very low risk. It is most unlikely that your CSW partner was infected. Less than 1% of U.S. CSWs have HIV. In addition, there has never been a case of HIV proven to have been caused by receipt of oral sex and the occurrence of HIV following performing cunnilingus on an infected partner is so low that infection rates can only be estimated as being less than 1 in 10,000. I have never seen or heard or anyone acquiring HIV from performing cunnilingus on an infected partner.
Your interval after exposure was more than 6 weeks. Results of the currently used, 4th generation combination HIV antigen-antibody tests are conclusive at any time for than 6 weeks after exposure.
I hope this information is helpful. You are in the clear and can be confident that you did not acquire HIV from the very low risk exposure you have described. EWH
