[Question #6086] Herpes 2

I just had a blood test done to check for Herpes after a possible infidelity scare with the person I’ve been with for almost a year.
I don’t have/never had any symptoms but my test came back positive - my partner has not had any symptoms either.
I also have Factor V Leiden and my INR has been off the charts lately.
Can the herpes blood test produce false negatives and can having other illnesses influence results?

What is the index value associated with your positive IgG test - and was it an IgG test?  If your index value is between 1.1 and 3.5, you need a confirmatory test as there are some false positive in that range.  The best confirmatory test is the herpes western blot from the Unive4rsity of Washington.  There are also some false negatives on the test as well, yes, compared to the blot.  We aren't certain what causes the false positive but I suppose it could be related to other illnesses.

I just confirmed with the  clinic that it was the IGG Test and the index value was 3.78.

Is this a definite positive?

I have seen false positives at that level as well.  There is probably a 95% chance that this will confirm as positive but there is definitely a chance that this is a false positive.  If it were me, I would confirm, given that you have no symptoms of herpes. Before doing that however, I would suggest that your partner be tested and if positive, then it is more likely that your result is a true positive.
