I'm 54 years old and get cold sores every 2-3 years.  What is the status of current research for a cure for HSV1?  Is there a currently clinical trials ongoing toward a cure for HSV?  If so, where may I read up on the research/trials?

I'm sorry, I'm not aware of any clinical trials ongoing specifically for HSV 1 BUT you can always look at clinicaltrials.gov and any trials would be listed there.

Are you treating the cold sores as they come up?  the approved dose is 2 grams of Valtrex, then 12 hours later, 2 grams again.  This should be taken at the very first sign of a cold sore coming.  Many people get what is called prodrome - a sensation of crawling on the lip before an outbreak happens.
