I was diagnosed with HSV1 and 2 in 2008. I have never had an outbreak. I have had several long term relationships over the past 11 years and have not passed herpes along to any of my partners. I recently looked back through my medical records to find out what type of test I was given in 2008 but could not find any record of the test. I am considering trying to find a way to take the western blot test. Is it possible that I do not have herpes since I have never had an outbreak and have not passed it on to anyone? One of my doctors suggested that I might simply be a "carrier". Is that possible?

Well, both are possibilities. You could be an asymptomatic carrier of the virus and could indeed infect others, with or without symptoms OR it could be that you don't have herpes. AND it would be unusual that you would be diagnosed with both at the same time - perhaps a blood antibody test? Those are not perfect and without an outbreak since 2008, you definitely would benefit from a western blot for herpes - no question!

You can call the University of Washington at 206-685-6066 in the US and ask them to send you the kit for the herpes western blot. You need a provider to fill in the lab requisition for you so you can work with your own provider to do this or I can work with you do to this at westoverheights.com, home page video conference. You will need to find a lab in your area that will draw and spin your blood or have it done at your provider's office. If you work with me, we are connected to several labs (not Quest or LabCorp) that will do this for you.
