[Question #6298] HSV2 transmission

Sometimes to save time, I shower with my 5 year old. Can you pass HSV2 through a rag, loofa or towel, or if my loofa touched their loofa simply by hanging next to each other on a rack in the shower? He has a small rash on their genitals called ballanitis I think, that’s what the doctor said,  but I am scared, if we do not touch skin to skin at all, he can’t get it through a shared object right? Thank you.

I would say there is no risk in the loofa situation that you describe, but I would suggest that each of you has your own washcloth and towel.  Balanitis is definitely different than herpes and they do not look the same so if you are worried that this might be a confused diagnosis, I wouldn't be worried.

We do have our own and use our own when we shower, I was just worried that if he used my towel when I wasn’t there, or if his father or grandmother gave him a bath is that something to worry about?

If you haven't used your towel in a while, I wouldn't worry about it.  I see nothing to worry about if his grandparents bathe him, no
