[Question #6375] HSV 2

I am straight male with no STD’s who recently started seeing a female who has HSV 2. She stated she has been on the antivirus medicine steady for over a year.
1. What is the probability of her transmitting the virus to me through vaginal intercourse with a condom?  Without a condom?
2. Also can the HSV2 virus be transmitted to me from receiving  or giving oral sex?
3. What are the best preventive measures for me to take ?

1.  With a condom and she being on antiviral medicine, the average risk of transmission is around 1% per year, having sex twice per week on average
2.  it is possible that you could acquire HSV 2 orally but HSV 2 oral infection is rare - the virus has a strong preference for the genital area.  Her giving you oral sex presents no risk if her infection is only genital, which is likely
3.  Condom and daily antiviral medicine and recognition of outbreaks, if there are any.

Good that you are seeking more information here.

Thank you,

For the first part, when you said sex twice per year.  Did you mean sex twice per week?

LOL, yes I did.  I don't think there would be much risk from twice a year!  Sorry about that
