[Question #6386] Herpes 2

I am female trying to avoid infecting my male partner with Herpes 2. After doing the research I started taking 1gm of Valacyclovir daily plus plan on using condoms and he will wear boxers with a front pocket to avoid skin to skin contact near the groin area. Any other steps we should take to avoid transmitting the virus?
Plus if after he touches the condom with his hand and my fluid gets on his skin on the hand his leg arm or torso could that also result in transmitting the virus?
You can see we are trying to be very careful and need clarification as to skin body fluid contact. Ideally can he touch my Genital with his hand just need clarification how my body fluid effects him if touched by his skin just never oral.
Thank you

So what you need is daily antiviral medicine (500 mg is fine but if you are breaking through on that dose, 500 mg twice a day is probably a little better than one gram once a day).  Then condom use.  I honestly think the whole boxer shorts thing might be quite a  bit of overkill.   I would not worry about hand contact with your vaginal secretions.  If he gives you oral sex, the risk is very very small that he would acquire HSV 2 orally as the virus doesn't like it there but it is not impossible.
I am going to assume that he tests negative for HSV 2 for you both to be taking all of these precautions to avoid transmission?

He is negative regarding virus.
My outbreaks are only about once every 18 months but I started the medicine to reduce the risk.
I am happy to hear his hand skin contact to my body fluid will not transfer the virus. I assume that is the same with leg arm and upper torso exposure but what about his lower abdomen thinner skin area or scrotum if my body fluid touches him in those areas during or after?
Thank you just trying to reduce the risk as much as much as possible.

You are correct that this is the same with arm and leg contact, yes, the skin is too thick for virus to penetrate.  The same is true of the lower abdomen as well.  The scrotum skin is slightly thinner but we worry most about the shaft or the penis and the anus where the skin is really thin
