[Question #6485] Hsv1 genital

I received oral sex and had genital sex. 5 days later I visited my dr due to having lesions near my vagina, he took a swab and the test came back HSV 1.  My question is if I have outbreaks will they occur on my genitals? Am I capable of passing on "genital herpes" to a new partner?

Yes, outbreaks will likely occur in the genital area but they could also show up anywhere in the "boxer shorts" area - so anus, buttocks, belly, thigh.  And yes, you can pass this infection to a new partner through intercourse but it is less likely than if you had HSV 2.  You will give off virus on about 13% of days (13 out of 100 days) for the first six months or so and then that number will start to decline until you've had it two year and then you'll give off virus on about 4 days out of the year - this is far far less than HSV 2 in the genital area.

Thank you for that, but if HSV1 "hibernates" in the base of the neck and HSV2 "hibernates" in the base of the spine how is my outbreaks will be in the "boxer" area?

These two viruses can both live in the alternate location.  HSV 1 is very commonly genital these days (HSV 2 rarely an oral infection).  So the old thinking about where these viruses live went out the window many years ago.
