[Question #6535] Herpes through clothing

Hello Terri,
I am aware this questiin may sound stupid. I went for a massage 2 days ago. No happy ending. About a 2 hour back massage with oil. She massage my head, legs, feet etc. My only fear is that she did offer me a 'happy ending' I refused but i was wearing shorts they offered me. I had my underwear on but they were loose fitting boxer shorts. My fear is if it ia a place offering this sort of service and they didn't wash the shorts - they were not the diaposabel type - is there anyway some infected peraon before me could have left hsv 2 hanging around and then passed it to me? Worried by lose fitting boxers rode up and shorts could have come unto contact with testicles - not sure if testicles can contract anyway as not a mucous membrane? Pretty certain penis did nit touch shorts, but if they did?
Felt i was being completely safe but had ocd in the past. Is this a stupid question?
Finally, can you clear up some of the misinformation on the net? I believe you say hsv 2 can not live in clothing. I have read that it dies after ten seconds on exposure to air. But also read 8 hours and more. What are the facts?
Is this completely safe? No contact with my genitals, just worried about safety of shorts. They were dry i believe.

No question here is stupid.  But the answer to your question is very very simple - this situation presents zero risk to you of acquiring any sexually transmitted infection.  The herpes virus requires human cells, warm and moisture to live.  None of those factors are present here.  Testicles are not mucous membrane, BTW.  You are completely safe here.

Hi Terri. Will accept this. A few years back i received a hand job and got your advice of zero risk on medhelp. Although it reassured me i still tested out til 16 weeks and it completely messed me up. Just for knowledge, worst case scenario, say client before me had an infection, i know i am clutching at negative straws here, and even my penis touched the shorts, it would not matter, it is simply zero zero risk and thus nothing to worry about. Will not pot again terri but to say thanks. Just to add your advice means the world. Already i feel the anxiety lifted. Thanks for your help.

Just curious. How long can herpes survive on clothes? No more questions. Thanks Terri.

That is not a simply answer - is depends upon how wet the clothes are, how warm they are, how much virus is present, all sorts of things.  The virus does not like clothing as clothing does not meet the requirements for the virus to live - I would say probably minutes if at all, which is very unlikely
