[Question #6555] Exposed

I was tested positive for both oral and genital herpes about 9 yrs. ago.  I had unprotected sex a few times with a married man. Our last sexual encounter was maybe about a month and a half ago. Earlier this month (January) he was having flu-like symptoms. A few days later his wife had flu-like symptoms but til this day (January 25) he have not came to me and said anything to me about either one of them having any outbreaks. Since they haven't had any outbreaks but had flu-like symptoms could they still have the virus ? And also if they do have it(which I'm praying they don't) will they have lesions/sores although he didnt come in contact with sores since I didn't have any neither time we had sex?

When you say that you tested positive for oral and genital herpes nine years ago, I am assuming that you mean that you tested positive for HSV one and HSV 2.  When people tell me this, I always ask if you have the paperwork for the test results and if you do, look at the numbers associated with a positive test. If the numbers fall between 1.1 and 3.5, you need a confirmatory test unless you have had symptoms consistent with those two viruses since the test. Let's assume for a moment that you have had symptoms and that the testing is correct. It is certainly possible that they both have the flu or a head cold.  I'm guessing if he had sores in the genital area or his wife did, you would have heard about it. Did you disclose to him that you have genital herpes? Are you aware that you can transmit the virus when you have no sores?

I do not have any paperwork for my test result but yes I was tested positive for HSV 1 and HSV 2. But I do have genital outbreaks every so often  but more so prodrome symptoms. I did let him know that I had herpes but not genital herpes and I wasnt aware that I could spread the virus without sores until I read deep in depth about herpes after the fact. And no he hasnt said anything to me about them having genital sores. But is it possible that they could have the virus since they had flu-like symptoms which I also read on the internet that flu-like symptoms are one of the signs for contacting the virus?

Well, if you are sure you have had outbreaks of genital herpes, I won't pursue this with you.
It is possible that he also has herpes yes, but so many people have flu like symptoms these days, I don't think by itself it is significant.  And what people consider flu symptoms also vary greatly.  I consider flu symptoms to be low grade temp, muscle and joint aches, light sensitivity, that kind of thing.  Not cold symptoms.

Yes, those were the symptoms he was having.  If that be the case, him having the virus, although he didnt come in contact with any genital sores, does this  mean he can have or will have genital sores?

Without any sores, the flu symptoms alone do not indicate that he has herpes.  Since there is another person involved, his wife, I do think it would be best if you leveled with him and told him the location of your herpes. If he unprotected intercourse, he could have been exposed to your virus.  It's hard news to hear I can only imagine.
