[Question #6558] hiv risk with herpes

Hi I had a sexual encounter with CSW which was protected from start to finish and it lasted less than 2 minutes. I had no worries until a few days later I got herpes sore about 2 inches above penus shaft way out of reach of condom. My question is what is my risk if this CSW had herpes and hiv even if I used condom? I have heard a person can be more infectious with hiv if has herpes but do condoms protect even with high viral loads? This was many years ago and after this incident I was so nervous I had an antibody test for hiv at 6 weeks. Can you assest my risk

Condoms protect from HIV irrespective of the viral load as long as they cover you.  In theory, if you had an open herpes sore and vaginal secretions from an HIV infected person got on them, you would have a small risk of HIV because the herpes sore could act as a "doorway" for the virus to enter.  If you did not have an open herpes sore and your partner had both HIV and herpes, the condom would still provide protection.  If your 6 week test was a 4th generation test, it is conclusive and proves that you did not get HIV.  From there sound of things, you have nothing to worry about and do not need further testing.  EWH

Dr. the hiv antibody test was more than 10 years ago when i had this encounter so it was 3rd generation. But what i understood my risk is zero? After this encounter i have only had mutual masturbation encounters which i understand is zero risk even with my herpes

Thanks for the additional information.  I agree with your estimate and would not worry further if I were you. EWH

Dr.  the reason i got worried after so many years is that a few months ago i lost some weight which i gained back a few weeks later
So i had a checkup after this where everything was normal except high blood sugar. If by any chance in this event more than 10 years ago  and after 6 week antibody test i got hiv would something show in bloodwork recognized by medical proffesional? And when you say small risk with herpes lesion is it 1/10000 or less?

With an event over 10 years ago it is most likely that you would have developed aids by this time how do you acquired HIV. You should look for another reason for your apparently unexplained weight loss.  Further, I would anticipate that you would have developed anemia or other healthcare problems by now if you had acquired HIV over 10 years ago. Your genital herpes would not contribute anything to any risk for HIV for the exposures you have described.  My advice is to put these concerns behind you. If you remain unsure you of course, could repeat your HIV test. I am confident that if you would it would be negative showing that you were not infected.

This is my third response to your questions. As per forum guidelines this thread will be closed shortly without further responses. I hope the information I have provided has been useful to you. Take care. EWH

Correct.  Mutual masturbation is considered absolutely no risk, even by conservative organization s such as the CDC.

Closing thread now.  EWH
