[Question #6618] 4th Generation accuracy and conclusiveness

Hi Doctors,
I'll get straight to the point here. I wont rehash my whole "exposure" details as I've already read enough threads to figure out it was in the "low risk" category.
I'm sure your answers wont have to be too in depth here, but in regards to 4th Generation HIV testing....
Regardless of risk assessment is there any chance that the 4th Generation test could miss an infection after taking the test at 7 weeks, 12 weeks and 19 weeks of exposure?
I've had all negatives at those intervals but need to be as sure as I possibly can be before moving on to new relationship.
I there any reason to take any more tests or will the test not gain any more sensitivity after these intervals?
In your clinical experience have you seen tests ever turn positive after any of these intervals of time?
Thank You!
A

Greetings and welcome to the forum, and thanks for your direct, straightforward question.
Thanks also for reading threads with quesitons similar to your own. Having done that, you probably have predicted the reply. Not only have I never heard of such a case, nobody else has either. There has never been a reported case of HIV not detected by the antigen-antibody (AgAb, 4th generation) HIV blood tests more than 6 weeks after becoming infected -- not counting maybe a few cases in which the exposed person was taking anti-HIV drugs that failed to prevent infection.
Your 7 week test was conclusive, and so were the later ones (which were unnecessary). All is well and you can safely continue or resume sex with your regular or other partners.
I hope this response is helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.
