[Question #6704] Advise on 3rd Gen testing

Hello,

Recently I did a 3rd Gen Point Care Rapid test from Alere that covers HIV 1 and 2. The technician told me that this test would be good after 30 day window, but I'm reading conflicting information about this telling the 3rd gen are not good until 90 days.

I did the test 45 days after the exposure. I think this is a 3rd gen test. The test was done in mid October, 2019.

Technically there was no unprotected penetration but a lot of rubbing and oral. I'm male and straight.

Could you please advise ? I'm reaaly worried about the possibility of doing a test within the window.

Welcome back to the forum. Thanks for your continuing confidence in our services.

As discussed with Dr. Hook about a year and a half ago, you should understand that this sexual event carried no significant risk of HIV. There has never been a proved case of HIV transmitted mouth to penis or by "a lot of rubbing". You didn't need HIV testing at all.

The test you had, and other third generation HIV tests, detect all infections by 50-60 days. At 45 days, they probably detect about 98% of infections. You can consider it conclusive, however. If we estimate the exposure carried 1 chance in a million of catching HIV, a 98% conclusive test reduces the chance you have HIV to 1 in 50 million. Probably even less, because even 1 in a million probably is too high for this exposure.

You of course are free to have yet another test if another negative result will be more reassuring. Dr. Hook and I understand that anxious persons often are more reassured by test results than by professional advice, no matter how expert. If you do it, stay mellow in the meantime. There is no chance you have HIV.

I hope these comments have been helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Hello Dr. Handsfield,

This question was related with another exposure, not with the one that was related 1 1/2 year ago. That one was completely clarified by Dr. Hook.

I was just worried about the one I had about 5 months ago, I know I had a very low risk. My doubt was about the last test, 45 to 50 days after this late one, it´s confusing to see so many conflicting information about the window period. I think this 3rd gen Allere test is IgG and IgM.

I totally believe in what you are telling me. I will not go paranoid.

I knew it was a more recent exposure, but the sexual contacts you describe were pretty much the same.---

Hello again,

I had the test date, October 19, since my encouter was in the end of August, the day count was at least 50 days, I'm sure it´s something like 55.

It was just a clarification about the 3rd Gen test. That 90-day some sites say is a bit scary.

Again, I'll totally believe in you and Dr. Hook and I'll not fall on the anxiety spiral. You both are the best.

Thanks for helping

55 days is conclusive for all practical purposes, although I don't understand why it would be "scary" if it took 90 days. In any case, I appreciate your kind words about our services!

That completes the two follow-up exchanges included with each question and so ends this thread. Best wishes and stay safe.
