[Question #6717] gonorrhea and mutual masturbation, kissing

Dear Doctors,

I think I have got pretty clear understanding (thanks to you) about hiv transmission.

Recently had a mutual masturbation and kissing with a guy, who was unfortunately diagnosed with gonorrhea in his mouth. Anal and urine are negative test.

What are my risks of getting it?
And if I got it, what is the risk to transfer it to my female partner?

Thank you.

Welcome back, but once again sorry you found it necessary.

Mutual masturbation doesn't transmit gonorrhea. Kissing has always been believed to be riski free, but recent research indicates a possibliity of transmission by kissing. However, this research is controversial and most STD experts do not believe there is significant risk from kissing. So almost certainly you do not have it. But for 100% reassurance, you could have a throat swab for gonorrhea testing. If you do it, you can expect a negative result.

If you do have it, your partner probably is not at risk. As just discussed, transmission by kissing is unlikely, and gonorrhea also is very rarely transmitted by oral sex in women. (Since your genital tract was not exposed, you cannot have genital infection and cannot infect your partner by vaginal or anal sex.) I suggest saying nothing to her, unless you decide to have a throat swab test and the result is positive.

Thank you very much Dr. Handsfield,

If I got it, how soon symptoms are developed? And what is the treatment? is it possible to cure it 100%?

What other std can I get from mutual masturbation, kissing and fingering?

Sorry for multiple questions. Just trying to stay safe.

Many thanks for your time.

Oral gonorrhea usually causes no symptoms at all; maybe 5-10% have sore throat, usually not severe. It is easily cured with standard gonorrhea treatment.

There is no signifcant risk for any other STD from such exposures.
