[Question #6728] HIV Risk?

Dear Doctor,

I hope your week is going well.

Yesterday I had an encounter with an escort in Boston. During our time together, she put the tip of my penis in her mouth for about one second and was trying to offer oral sex. I turned it down because I was worried about the hiv risk associated to receiving unprotected oral sex. Later I had protected vaginal sex with her.

My question is: was I at risk for HIV for this exposure because the tip of my penis was in her mouth for a second? Do I need testing?

Thank you in advance for your kind help!

Best,
Harry

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your question.  I'll be glad to provide some information.  Receipt of oral sex is safe sex in terms of HIV acquisition.  While other STIs such as gonorrhea or NGU can occasionally be acquired from receipt of oral sex, there are no proven cases in which a person has acquired HIV from receipt of oral sex.  A very few persons have acquired HIV from performing oral sex on infected male sex partners but that too is quite rare.   From what you describe there is no reason for concern about HIV from the encounter you describe and no need for testing.  EWH
