[Question #6818] HSV-1 Oral to Genital

1. I can’t find a straight answer for my needs. Some sources say it’s impossible, can’t, unlikely, theoretically while other sources say it’s very possible. Here’s my question, you and your partner have had a history of cold sores since childhood. You have a cold sore and give oral sex to your female partner and then have intercourse. What are the chances you will both get genital herpes?

2. How long is the window of time after you feel tingling or a burning sensation in your genitals do blisters generally appear?

1.  It is not impossible, but it is extremely unlikely.  In 35 years of practice, I have seen it happen once and heard about it happening one other time.
2.  IF the tingling or burning is a result of virus activity, blisters will generally appear with a few days.  But remember that not all tingling or burning is a result of virus activity and indeed, some outbreaks are aborted, that is, they never turn into an outbreak at all.

So I thought I was getting a canker sore and it turned out to be a cold sore. I went to my doctor and she gave me Valacyclovir. I was towards the end of my prescription when I realized I was supposed to be taking two a day instead of one. I started to feel tingling in my penis, legs and feet on the last day I took it. With that being said, I have had issues with my lower back and tingling in my feet in the past. About a week ago I had some suspicious pimples just above my genital area and got them checked out by my doctor. She said they were normal and if I had herpes I would know it. It’s been about 18 days now of constant tingling in my genitals and feet. Does this sound like herpes?

Not with just the tingling, no,  and if you have ever had cold sores in the past, and I'm assuming you have had, it would be extremely unlikely for you to get it in a new place, as we discussed.  I would guess that your tingling is unrelated to the cold sore.
